Living in crown heights with 2 roommates. Less than 1k per person. 40 min commute. It’s good for right now. I’m saving and my commute is manageable.
My first job in NYC got me a salary of 85k year. I was living in a nice 2 bed apartment in Sunnyside, Queens, with wife and two kids (1.8k month in rent).
Money was tight but not terrible. I was able to have fun, go out for drinks and dinner once a week, travel in US once and travel abroad once along the year. Of course I am disciplined with money, but I think some people just waist too much in drinks, clothes and going out.
It's doable. I’m living very comfortably in a renovated studio in Queens. It is pretty small, but beats having roommates. 25min commute door to door. Eat out most days of the week, travel 2-3times per year and have enough to splurge on clothes once in a while. I still end up with enough to save. It helps that I don’t drink.
2 bedroom apartment with 3 people, and, a fake wall.
200 sq ft studio.
$100k is a lot when you’re starting out! If you’re struggling with $60-100k you’re doing it wrong.
Born and raised in Staten Island. Combined income of 180k, mortgage, bills, but a 3 bed 2 bath home, finished basement and a yard, a kid, and a dog. We manage. The commute has gotten better over the years - the express bus now has a dedicated express lane. And the area near the ferry has gotten much nicer/livable
50k, 2 BR with 1 roommate in north Brooklyn. Not saving beyond 401k (max %), but able to travel, go out and live comfortably enough at the moment.
$200k combined income, large 1 bed on the UES. 30ish min commute to Soho/20ish min commute to midtown.
It's not that hard to do in manhattan. Did it with a 550 sq foot studio
1 bedroom apartment with boyfriend in queens
I make $80k, pay $2k/month for a studio, have a 30 min commute, pay my student loans, and still save $$ every month. YNAB or Mint are lifesavers.
I'm in Staten island as well. Bought before housing started to skyrocket, so I'm sitting on some nice equity. Commute isn't great, 1:15 on a good day
#DINK double income, no kids
Moved here making $55k years ago. Lived with 2 roommates in a 2 bedroom converted into 3 bedroom with fake wall. It was a pretty good setup. I wish I was paying that same rent now
*and 30 min commute
Moved here making $55k, lived in a one bedroom in Yorkville/UES with a roommate and thought I was living the LIFE. Never felt poor or stressed about money
6 floor walkup and a roommate in Manhattan. I work late so most of my meals and cabs are paid for which helps. Though it sucks not making overtime
My first agency job in NYC paid me 35k - i lived with a roommate in Jersey City, rent was like 800/month each and my commute was about an hour.
