So did you actually like tax or do you just like being challenged? Plenty of jobs can be challenging, but I'd rather be challenged in a role I enjoy. Like I would be challenged in tax, but I'd also hate it lol. There may also be different tax service lines that fit your interest more that SALT. I would not go back into tax if your plan is to go into finance. The skillset doesn't align well and tax background isn't valued. You shouldn't be making this kind of choice just for the pay. You can make a lot either way. What kinds of things do you enjoy working on, and what career fits those interests? You don't want to be 5 years into tax only to realize you wish you were in FP&A (or vice versa, although I've never seen anyone in FP&A want to switch to tax). I would look into an internal transfer to FP&A or start applying externally. A lot of people in finance do have MBAs but I recommend getting a finance job first and then applying to the MBA with that finance background if you still want the MBA.

Yeah I don’t think I really enjoyed reading tax instructions and tax codes. I like the research aspect of it. I was also able to do some tax modeling for different tax scenarios which I really enjoyed. Ideally, I’d like my next job to have some research, financial modeling, data analysis, and decision making involved. I like making sense of numbers figuring out if there’s a trend or pattern and why. I’m just not sure what career has that and I also believe I should dig a little deeper because those things I enjoy I can do in a lot of accounting/finance jobs. Throughout my senior accountant role though I know I don’t care for journal entries or technical accounting.

I am also contemplating getting an MBA to help with the move into FP&A/Finance. I just need advice on what is a more lucrative career really. I care about pay, wlb, and management.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?
