I’m currently an L&E attorney in California but I loved my coding classes in college. Anyone ever parlay their law degree into something involving computer science? Aside from patent work of course

+1 - I’m super interested in doing the same so following!

Just here to show encouragement, go for it! Speaking as a non-Californian, L&E law in CA is a mess.

What are you envisioning outside of patent prosecution or patent litigation where your coding skills might be specifically useful?

Legal tech company maybe?

Privacy? Big data/AI/automation?

I have not personally, but in law school (2015) we had a guest speaker come in. The speaker was in big law and learned to code. At some point he eventually became in-house counsel to a tech company, pre IPO. He felt like his coding skills along with his legal skills had gotten him the position.

He later became successful with getting onto boards of other tech companies. I wish I could remember his name, I believe he became very successful in the tech sector.

Definitely look into companies like KIRA which provide machine learning ocr services to law firms

This is the most basic question, so yep, I’m asking you to take it easy on me when you reply. I have been practicing for about 5 years total. I have been in civil practice for 2 years. These 2 years have been the most demoralizing, unfulfilling 2 years of my life. I have been giving myself pep talks to find the “positive” spin on it but firm life isn’t for me. I know networking is key but do you have some thoughts/suggestions on how to make an exit...crying at therapy is becoming too much.

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.
