I’m currently at an Am100 in a mid-sized market considering a move to a larger market (probably Dallas) to join an Am 20 law firm. Main driver is compensation—I’d easily get a $100K raise from where I’m at now.
Am I crazy for doing so or should I give it a shot? I’m worried I’ll hate the higher pressure of Am20, although I already bill 2200-2300 over here, so not that big of a lifestyle difference. Thoughts?

Give it a shot - if you find out you hate it, you might have even better exit opportunities than if you stayed where you are

like

Go for it. You’re already billing the hours, make the money, and that kind of money in Dallas is amazing. Your exit options will improve, if you hate it, you can always lateral again or do another exit like in-house in a year or two.

like

I think you should definitely give it a shot! If you do end up hating it, you'll probably have better exit options anyways. I switched from an Amlaw 100 firm that didn't pay market to a V50 that pays market and I am so glad I did! I'm currently in Dallas and I really like it here.

Only reason to stay would be if you think there are realistic chances at partnership, if that's important to you. But I'd probably strike while the iron is hot.

There’s an opportunity to step up into the role of Director of Product, but I’ve only got 2.5 years of experience and am already being paid below average by like 15%. I’ve accepted this because A. My company has historically underpaid people but I still like the people and B. My lack of experience. I think a promotion would come with a raise, but the percentage difference would most likely only grow and I’m not sure that would be ok with the responsibilities I’d be stepping into. Any advice?

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

My company went toxic in the last couple months. Chose me and started interviewing. Had a very successful interview with Amazon but recruiter is working hard trying to place me and said there’s no knowing how long to find a team. Meanwhile I just received a Director offer for a company with a 29% pay bump July 1. If Amazon or any other FAANG/large co gets back to me, is there an acceptable way to not burn bridges with new job and accept or delay start date with FAANG? Or fuck it just hop?

need advice.

I have been working in an interim role as a portfolio manager. I was promised that the role would be mine. However, after doing the job for 2 months, I have been advised that we might not get the funding for the role and I might not get the raise and the title but my responsibilities will be the same.

Its a political minefield.

How should I back out elegantly that I need to be compensated fairly and competitively from this mess without burning any bridges

Im in a junior position, have excellent feedback, work hard. I make very little $. I had 2 job offers and told my current company I couldn’t afford to stay there. They immediately matched. 4 months later I followed up and the timing of the adjustment will now align with the timing cost of living increases for inflation which apparently I’m ineligible for. Should this exempt me from a cost of living increase due the adjusted salary 5 months after we agreed to this?

It seems like everyone is in agreement that switching firms gives you a salary boost, but that you could be viewed as someone that doesn’t stick around. Has anyone felt like they got held back from jumping firms every 2-3 years for the salary bump? I know peers that bounced around 2-4 times in a 7 year span and they are making significantly more money than if they stayed at their first job, however it didn’t seem like any of the new companies cared that they bounced around. Other experiences?
