One other concern could be that partners are not good at delegating work or not good at training. Do they have a history of knowing how to use associates properly? And are you hoping to be trained in the practice area? Sometimes partners get used to working only with partners and they struggle.
This. I was at a small firm (3 partners, 1 associate). I was the first fresh lawyer in almost fifteen years and the partners had no time or plan to train me. A lot of learn by doing, but not a lot of mentoring. Also a lot of pressure to unofficially be their succession plan.
I would definitely consider this. My associate peers are the only reason I stick around 😂 the partners in my group aren’t toxic at all it’s just…sometimes you need to know you’re not the only one lol
The upside is you won’t be fighting for work.
Depends on the partners! I work in a group with three partners and love it- consistent work, don’t have to compete with other associates but am still close with a lot of other associates in my class year, and get to be the go to to join calls or meetings if a client prefers a partner/associate online rather than two billing partners. The newest partner in the group has been super helpful. Maybe it makes a difference how senior they all are?
Good points!
