It’s time to leave. This is a normal part of professional growth. After staying at a company too long you are likely to be underpaid in accordance with the rest of the market.
In my opinion, there’s no room for feelings and emotions when striving for career growth. Deciding to leave a company is strictly a strategic business decision.
You can get a new offer and try to use that as leverage but if they decline, then be prepared to leave. Also, it’s almost never a good idea to accept a counter offer. Statistics show that most people who accept a counter offer end up leaving within 6 months to a year anyway.
I would hint to her that I am looking to advance my career and stay competitive in the industry and that’s it. Sounds like it’s a company issue and nothing she can do about.
I wouldn’t directly tell her that I’m looking. Instead I would let her know that I’m not very happy with the current salary and present how much difference you are making, what the market value is, what value you are already bringing, etc., and ask for her help and support to present the case to management. Maybe create a document so she has something concrete to back you up and make a case for you. Worked for me. That way no one things you’re just asking for a hike, but there’s solid data for them to see why you deserve it.
