I make 85k as a TAP.. you should definitely be making more
I think your father in law would be right if you worked for a private or public company. Working for a non-profit has historically meant getting lower pay but great benefits and sometimes better titles then you would at a company.
No offense, but I think small companies and non-profits use inflated job titles like HR Director. My guess is you’re responsibilities are more liken to that of an HR manager, which for your company size, you should be making at least $120k
Yes probably salary but you can not get expect that amount of PTO in a new role. Also sounds like you have a lot of flexibility. Those perks will not likely be available in a new role.
You’re a HR Director in NJ making only $87k?! You definitely could be getting waaaaaay more… tech recruiters make $95k-125k… I make $75k as a recruiting coordinator in tech. 😅
I always heard that non-profits severely underpay their employees, and I definitely see that here. Get a role somewhere else! You can definitely get $150k+. If you look at the average in the NJ/NYC area, it’s way more than $87k.

There is also a quality of life factor only you can evaluate. You said you get 7 weeks PTO and complete flexibility
It definitely depends on industry, but I urge you to make a move! You should be paid 100k+ minimum!
Your PTO and benefits seem really strong so would factor that into your comp. That said, I think 120K at least seems more appropriate as a base in addition to your benefits.
Agree! Definitely want to keep the PTO and flexibility in mind. Most companies you will start around 2-3 weeks PTO with basic holidays, potentially some floating.
I worked for a NonProfit for 9 years as an HRD, started with 60+ employees; fast forward to 250+ ---- responsibilities became insane, and I was at $108k -- I left after I asked for a raise, and it took one month to get $3k -- I know for a fact we were not under in terms of profit -- yes non-profit must also make profits. I was angry, and I guess that is all it took. I now work for another nonprofit and am working remotely at $175k with a bonus. I am also SHRM-CP. You have to advocate for yourself; that is the first step. And maybe, like me, if you get angry enough, you will jump ship too (maybe). We took the job in NP because we believe in the mission. But at the same time, I believe some NP take advantage of their people. It took my old NP to find my replacement a year to fill the HRD role, and from what I heard, they are not happy and looking for another replacement..
I also have an MBA forgot to add that
The scope of your role is an important factor. However, if I just go on the 7 years experience and MA degree, my guess would be $150-200k total compensation at Fortune 500. I’ve never seen 7 weeks of PTO anywhere. If you’re sharp, strategic and can take on large scale work, you could easily double your pay in the for-profit sector. But then again - you would be in the for-profit sector working hard to make white men wealthier.
I don’t know. Nonprofits aren’t exactly known for competitive pay. I have a good friend who’s the executive director of a nationally recognized nonprofit and he makes $75k. So….
I make $140k+ stock units as a Recruiter in tech just outside of Jersey. No direct reports.
It’s non profit. You can make much more but would need to go into the for profit private sector.
Your starting at a mid to large cap is 200k plus bonus. Your total comp should be approx $250k. The issue is you work for a tiny non profit so I am not sure how you would perform in a fortune 100-500 company as it is a high stress role.
Also we are now posting salary ranges in California and New York. Go check out the huge difference in pay.
Even for the nonprofit sector this is low—it’s closer to a mid-level IC salary. If you manage a function or a team, you should be much higher.
87 is low, I make 85k and run HR for the whole company of 235 ees. You should be pulling 115k
Rising Star
Generally, smaller companies and non-profits pay significantly lower. If you passionate about what you and fulfilled and your salary aligns to your worth, yes. However, I believe you could make about $50K more including bonuses with a for-profit based your experience and skills. Always know your worth in the market place and maybe leverage this to get more in your current role or seek a new opportunity.
Anyone with director in their title should START at 100k minimum. Then factor in number of employees, number of states you have employees, how many direct reports, areas that you own (i.e. payroll, benefits, etc).
You definitely could, however since you can work remotely why not use that to your advantage.
Good god. That’s about 1/3 of what I made last year just as a recruiter. 😮
Last year about $225
This year on track for about $270
Agency staffing nationwide. If you drive revenue you can write your own check. All I do is crank billable hours
You just can’t as make as much as you would in for profit organizations. I recommend leaving and you will definitely increase your salary a lot!
Where in NJ? If it’s close to NYC metro then maybe a different story? I’m not sure based on COL but in Buffalo that would spot on. But 7 weeks PTO!?! That’s pretty incredible lol
