Why did the manager want to let go everyone? And what do you hope to accomplish with HR?
He succeeded in getting rid of them because they are now gone and I’m picking up the pieces. I’m leaving also. I’ve resigned a number of times, and they keep offering me more and more things, but I am still going to leave.
I’m doing a lessons learned now so that the next time I’m in a leadership position I’ll be able to handle this better. I tried:
- 1 on 1s with him, talking to him, educating him, listening to him, warning him about what could go wrong, acquiescing …
- Doing the more techy stuff myself to shield the team
- Protecting the team with a fair review that gave them time to ramp up or make a decision to go
- Starting to train the team
- Asking to be moved out of his leadership chain
I’m out of his chain now (one small success), but he is so far up that he could do this to me or anyone else again at any time - or through another person.
One last thing: he did this to others also; typically whenever he gets involved with a team some percentage of the team quits. So it isn’t a racial thing or a gender thing - it’s just poor management and a lack of understanding of how many things work - and also an utter lack of concern for others.
