I’m down to billing only 25 hours on my client this week so I drew up a CV timeline, reflected on it, and collected my thoughts. (Continued in comments)

The COVID-19 timeline I’ve drawn up based on many news sources and a lot of independent research and my thoughts on the world’s response. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - November 17th, 2019: New data out of China suggests this was the first confirmed case. 44 days since first case in Wuhan... December 31st, 2019: A pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan, China was first reported to the WHO Country Office in China All of November/December 2019: China remains open and no international travel is restricted anywhere in the world. 5 days since WHO notification... January 4th, 2020: China’s Center for Disease Control activated a level 2 emergency response on Jan. 4, 2020 14 days since WHO notification... January 13th, 2020: First confirmed case identified outside of China in Thailand 15 days since WHO notification... January 14th, 2020: Based on early data out of China, WHO declares no finding of human-to-human transmission 7 days since WHO declaration of no human-to-human transmission and 21 days since China makes WHO aware... January 21st, 2020: WHO and other authorities publicly concede that there is human-to-human transmission AND US reports first confirmed case January 23rd, 2020: China locks down Wuhan and prevents all travel in and out. January, 30th, 2020: The outbreak is declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern 10 days since first US case.... January 31st, 2020: Trump declares travel restrictions to/from China AND Italy confirms first case All of January: China has been denying WHO and CDC involvement / help February 2nd: US travel restrictions to/from China go into effect February 11th, 2020: WHO officially renames disease COVID-19 March 11th, 2020: WHO declares a pandemic March 13th, 2020: US travel restrictions to/from Europe go into effect. March 17th, 2020: Europe announces closure of its borders 134 days since first case in Wuhan, 90 days since WHO notice, and 69 days since the first US confirmed case.... March 30th, 2020: Over 784k confirmed cases and over 37k deaths globally - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TWENTY ONE DAYS from the time the WHO and the rest of the world first learned about COVID-19 to the first case in the US. THIRTY ONE days from that date to the first case in Italy. Now based on that timeline and the little access to data many world leaders and organizations (ie WHO) had, I ask you, how does the world prepare for this? How would you prepare for this? How do you mobilize your country to handle a virus you learned about only a few days ago? Even China’s own internal system, which was built to enable quick identification of viruses like CV19 and prevent future SARS-like outbreaks, failed them. It’s so easy to suggest following a model like S. Korea or poke at some of Europe’s responses when we aren’t the ones having to make the calls that could and will impact millions, even billions. It doesn’t matter the size of your pandemic team or the strength of your supply chain, or the capacity of your health care system, the ‘system’ failed the world. Not to mention, you’re dealing with an enemy so few countries and governments had ever seen before or had much ‘practice’ with. The access to data was limited and the data was inaccurate which led to incorrect assumptions and outputs. The time so consolidated there’s no way suppliers could create and distribute enough PPE to cover healthcare workers around the world or for hospitals / military to mobilize and increase capacity. Many companies, even the most agile, can’t even mobilize that quickly. I may offend some with this claim, but I don’t believe countries or governments could react in time to prevent what is happening now. There is no one to blame, the system failed us all. It failed every country, health care workers, first responders, and us common folks. We are now only left to be reactive and deal with the virus and the mess it’ll leave in its wake. The world will hurt for months, even years, to come and when the dust settles we can only hope that the US and the world has many, many lessons learned. #COVID19 #coronavirus #pandemic

So...it’s China’s fault. Latest experts think there are 40k deaths in Wuhan based on what they are seeing from morgues.

Those 'experts' from a Yahoo finance article? Do you work for Fox? 😅 That's not to deny that China's late reporting is very shamful

My first thought lol. Only because I would totally do this given enough free time and my Rx.

Good job forming an opinion based on your own research instead of low quality sites. But.... It is excessive to say that governments could not react in time. Some governments did react in a timely, effective manner. Others didn't. Compare the responses of the US and South Korea. Fast government action probably wouldn't have stopped cases in the USA from happening in general, but things could have been handled much better than they were, and earlier. "The system" could be more effective, but that doesn't let governments around the world off the hook.

A white friend is looking to buy an apartment. One apartment is in an older building in an established neighborhood. It doesn't have an in-unit washer/dryer. The other apartment is in a brand new building in a historically black neighborhood that has seen a lot of gentrification but it's still near a project with a gym, a nice roofdeck with a grill and in-unit washer dryer and costs $100k less. She's considering the first place despite it being more expensive and older. Racism is expensive.

A junior requested to be reassigned from my project because I let them know they were under performing and delayed a project deadline due to inaction. They've let me know that I've made them feel pretty bad and does not think I'm a good manager. However it has been a consistent issue with this individual (lack of initiative, motivation, sloppy deliverables, and does not ask questions when they are unclear on an ask). I have tried to make space for them to ask questions and take initiative (cont)

4th year going into my 5th year and am leading discovery and case management on a case with a $5 million budget (yeah!) with a rocket docket. Starting to understand why partners have no time to do substantive work: it’s all answering client questions and managing staff, associates, and reviewing partners. Any tips for the transition? I’ve never been too demanding from my colleagues and usually just pick up any slack myself. Now I need to motivate others and give direction.

Interested to hear how people learn project management. I have done PRINCE2 exam and read PMP materials, but I find these are too textbook theory based. Real life projects seem to be very different and a lot more complicated. I often do not know what needs to be done unless someone tells me. I believe you can learn these things on the job, but I am keen to expedite this with some books or courses. Are there any resources that are particularly helpful?

Applying for a couple of things and randomly decided to google myself to see what recruiters might see. Had helped a friend out way way back with a school project and came across her blog post about it on her personal website in which she says the reason she asked me to help is because she trusted my opinion since I am a “harsh critic.” I think she meant keen critic or that this was supposed to be a positive but to me, this reads as an insult (continued in comments)

The degree of relentlessness required to get to that level seems to require so trauma or imbalance to fuel, right?
