I'm drowning in one-off business logic or planning requests ever since the last shuffle of devs. I'm the most senior, and def know the most, but on a team where our devs wear many hats, it means that I don't get to code nearly as much as I want to.

I also feel like these one-off requests do nothing for my career, as they're not seen as valuable to anyone other than the requesters.

Has anyone been in this position? What do I do to combat this?

You say no.

You push back.

You ask how it serves the business. Push for detailed analysis.

You give them a list of “work” that needs to be done and have them choose priorities. Then you send that list of priorities to every person who has “work” that needs to be done. Refer all questions to the person who made the decision. Hopefully they start getting the point, bogging themselves down jockeying for position, or quit asking you.

You have to get good at enforcing discipline on them, playing the cya game.

Start interviewing.

BTW, I’ve been in that exact spot. My goal was to force the business to put someone in charge, because I wasn’t paid enough to put up with that BS.

My team has a product owner that triages requests like this. Engineers don't typically sit in these meetings. If the request is a need and is important to the business, the team does it. If the request really is a one off that only serves one person, they steer us more lucrative work.

Yeah, we don't really have a product owner or anything like that. Devs end up being business analysts, product owners, QAs, and the actual developers. Which means many avenues for being the SME on something and being bogged down 🙃

Do you disclose when you were promoted on your CV? I’ve been as a assistant manager for over a year but have just been ‘promoted’ to manager. Have been doing the same role for the entire time… only thing that changed was my official role title. Do I need to split this out into two roles on my CV?

Would ideally like to keep as one optically to avoid having to ‘spend more time in the manger role’… as I’ve been doing that role for a year now and keen to move on!

Thanks in advance and Merry Xmas!

Now,

HR says that they will release the offer letter today itself. I waited but nothing.

next day...

Offer letter approval is pending with some manager in America.

Hiring manager has to get approval form CEO.

Is it expected that people who exit from MBB/Deloitte at post mba levels (PL/EM/M) take paycuts when going to industry? (non FAANG, PE). I'm In process at multiple internal consulting/strategy groups who say the paycut is part of the trade-off for less hours/no travel.

But as a female🐠, I can't discern whether this is just a negotiation tactic. Mentors have told me never take less pay.

For reference, this is at a comparable industry equivalent level (not clear up/down)

I’ve been working as a data analyst for about 5 years, and I’m wanting to switch careers into SE. I recently finished a python course, and I’m unsure of my next steps. Has anyone read any interesting books on how to approach QA?

On my team, software engineers end up creating test cases by writing up step-by-step guides for each ticket. QA employees follow these and innovate them where they can - but they ultimately need SEs to provide them A LOT.

This process seems dumb - the test cases disappear after the ticket is completed and I feel like QA isn't much of a professional role if they just follow guides provided to them.

Is there a better way?
