Your paycheck will go up ... no matching after you max out . Technically you have 2 increases throughout the year .. max out of SS and 401k.

I try to hit 401k exactly over the year but not early. Some companies will not contribute more than 6% of each check and so you end up shorted on the match until they do a true up payment after end of year. True up is usually manual so they can screw it up or not pay it if you leave.

Looking to expand our investment portfolio and seeking advice. Currently max out 2 Roth IRAs, my 401(k) (spouse doesn't have one), HSA and 10% of each paycheck into mutual funds/crypto investing. I'm trying to steer my spouse into a second home purchase given how crazy the market has been, but he's saying more $$ into mutual funds with compounding gains will return similar returns with less headaches (e.g. maintenance, tenants, etc). Wondering what else everyone is doing with their excess cash?

Sanity check needed. We own a home we paid $280k for, 6 years ago. We've begun to outgrow it and are debating building on vs buying.

Building would probably be $350k, would take about 4 months, and would require us to move out temporarily (likely 50-75% of that time), but then we'd have *exactly* what we want. Buying would cost ~$650k (plus $59k in closing costs to sell and buy).

House is worth $400k if we do nothing; addition would likely double value.

What would you do? Build or buy?

1) Put 10k into iBonds and $90k as downpyament and closing costs for a property (I’ll need to put in 20%, already talked to several mortgage agents)
2) Put $0 in ibonds and put all the $100k in the home investing (given it’s a little more of an expensive property, given some other factors - location, size, etc)

Lot of fear in the market right now (understandably so). The situation in Ukraine is awful and the potential consequences are scary to think about.

There are some who want to sell in fear of their investments falling further. Do not do this. Hold and continue to buy more. Continue your 401k contributions, and add whatever you can afford after every paycheck into your brokerage. Those who sold the covid crash were often late buying back in.

This is the dip you're worried about.

Hi! I have already maxed out my 2020 Roth IRA for the year, but I did not start contributing to my 401k until 2 months ago. My company will not allow me to contribute more than 50% of my earnings. Is it possible to add money to a Roth 401k somehow? I know this is not possible me with a traditional 401k but had some trouble finding a clear answer for the Roth 401k. I wanted to max out my contributions to my 401k for this year but I think it my not be possible.
