In short, you can identify yourself however you want. Disclose your sexuality as much or as little as you want. But be careful asking others theirs. If you’re 100% certain they’ll be cool with the question go for it, but otherwise you don’t want to put someone in a position to put themselves before their ready. Personally, I steer clear of asking others. I let them tell me if and when they’re ready
When I started feeling more comfortable being out at work, I started out by joining our LGBTQ+ ENG’s MS Teams site. Since I was already on the local diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, I decided to take the responsibility of leading an LGBTQ+ initiative and ended up becoming the lead for the ENG in our local office. So now I work with the national ENG team and get to decide on local events (this happened over the course of maybe 2 months).
As for disclosing sexuality, I haven’t really done that in a formal capacity but I have mentioned my sexuality casually in a local office diversity event/discussion.
Agree with Counsel1!! You should be free to talk about yourself, that’s kind of the point of these groups, but personally I don’t think it’s cool to put people on the spot and ask them about their sexuality - even in the context of an LGBTQ+ group. They can speak about it if they’re comfortable.
