I’m feeling discouraged looking at PM roles. 6 years of consulting/sales engineering experience. But every PM job says “5+ years of product exp” (despite transferable skills). Anyone feel similarly?

Apply anyway. The right opportunity will eventually present itself, but you won't know if you don't keep pushing forward.

I agree - just apply! what's the worst that'll happen? they'll say no and you'll move on

Apply anyway. There are a few companies who will do hard screeners online and HR confirm sometimes. But if you can get in and justify your experience matters, it could be your chance.
The other approach is move into it internally.

Yeah, the requirements for a PM are strictly experienced-based but if you don't have any experience directly in the field, you can't even apply so it's a "chicken before the egg" type of thing.

Keep trying, I had to apply for a full year before I got my first APM role. Had been in UX for 4 years prior to switching

Do you have a track record of products you have worked on through your SE / consulting experience that turned into full production revenue-generating products? If so, play that up.

I transitioned from being a SE to being a PM. I was fortunate in that my first PM role was in the same company that I was an SE. Several of my SE projects got rolled into the product, so PM-Ing those products was a natural evolution.

I agree with applying anyways, but you’ll need to go above and beyond to prove your value. Make sure you have a clear objective on your resume, include a cover letter, and possibly even reach out to the recruiter or hiring manager to explain how you would love an opportunity to interview as you feel like this is a natural next step in your career path.

If you just “quick apply”, you’ll get lost in the shuffle.

I have an interview for a LTC/Rehab Nurse Manager, Infection Preventionist position next week. My base salary is $40/hour as a charge nurse. With overtime I’ll be finishing the year about $15000 above my base pay. I have questions: first, I know I’ll be putting in at least the same number of hours I’m current working (50+/wk). How do I leverage that to avoid a pay cut. Also, any tips from people in this position?
