look at yourself in the mirror and be disgusted. tell yourself nobody will love you if you don’t go to the gym. believe it.
if you’re not critical of your appearance or your health, it’s going to be hard to “kick yourself in the ass.”
I'd recommend waiting until your 1st divorce when you realize that nobody has interest in someone that could simply be defined as 'sloth.' Or, stop being a lazy ass, set some goals, and monitor your progress.
Exercise in the morning when all your friends are asleep anyways 💁🏻♀️
Orange Theory OP! Been only 2 months I have never skipped because I would not dare lose any $. So far amazing results. I sleep better and feel more confident at work.
Check it out because I had your issue as well after getting a gym membership!
Just convince yourself that health/nutrition/exercise should be your priority and if you keep up with those aspects your work product will only be greater, and take notes of progress/results you have from exercise. Hard to not do something when you so clearly see the benefits from it 😃
I go to OrangeTheory. If you cancel a class with les than 8hrs’ notice, you either lose it or get charged $20 (unlimited membership). It’s good encouragement to not chicken out in the morning — though, I also like the classes enough that I don’t want to not go most of the time!
To the above responses, I don’t find self loathing to be a useful motivator at all. Just the great feeling after a morning workout, even if I don’t do all the sets or whatever I wanted to, is enough to make me want to do it again (with the preworkout lol)
Pick a goal... and don’t make it lose 10 pounds. Maybe it is run a X minute mile...maybe it is workout 2X per week, maybe it is put on an old t shirt or pair of jeans. Create a calendar invite or visual board that you have to check yourself with once a week and once a month and just decide this is the thing you will be fully transparent and brutally honest with yourself about. When you do your check in...literally ask yourself and maybe even out loud... Why didn’t I achieve this this time.... then get to work on fixing whatever the answer is to that question and keep on keeping on until it is normal to put workout time in your routine. If you can look at your goals, and then ask yourself honestly why/why not and then still just say ahh the hell with it this time... then your problem is not about the gym and staying consistent, it is about you yourself and will take you fixing things not tied to your gym habits to fix
Set goals, short and longer term ones. A short term goal might be to look good for a specific occasion coming up, longer term might be able to lift X amount of weight or run a marathon or something. Make it SMART and accomplish it!
Make it a part of your routine. For example I take my gym clothes with me to work and go to the gym after work. I tell myself I won’t go home until I go to the gym. This has worked for me and I have started to enjoy the routine.
Paying for classes works for me too. I am not able to see $20 or $30 go to waste so that’s good enough to get my butt off the couch.
i find that “self loathing” is what motivates me when i don’t have motivation. i have a routine. i am pretty good about sticking to it for the sake of sticking to it. but sometimes i’m not, and that’s when i take my shirt off, look in the mirror, and pinch my stomach or look at how small my quads are. that’s what gives me the extra motivation to work out on days that i don’t want to.
Once you start seeing a week or so of true improvement it helps encourage you to keep going. As for getting those first few days in, I always feel energized with some combination of caffeine & sugar near the end of the work day.
I find motivation beyond my own desires, and that is to be healthy for my wife and my kids so that I can torment them with dad jokes for the decades to come. Wait.. that is for my own selfish desires.
It is because you have not experienced or fully understood the value of having a strong, healthy body. Bodybuilding is important in three ways.
1) It makes you feel really, really good to have a strong and healthy body. You will have less stress, better energy, higher productivity, and better mood. You will not be limited to situations when you body feels uncomfortable - you get a sense of true, physical freedom.
2) Through getting a good body, you will also get a strong mind. High discipline, confidence, focus, and determination guard you through the bad days or adversities. They come back to help you through your other challenges in life.
3) You will better understand yourself and love yourself. Bodybuilding teaches you how to use your body correctly. You come to see your soul vividly when fighting yourself in the gym. You finally can overcome the weakness physically and mentally. You will find yourself so beautiful.
Well that’s all you needed to say OP... I played D1 sports in college as well. It is always the struggle of what to continue competing for if not just yourself. If you were a track athlete, and a hurdler especially...merry Christmas...

I went to this a few weeks ago in Chicago and it is such an awesome event!! Will be sure to compete next year and few senior folks in deloitte discussing how to take a larger role with the D10 founder. I am still mulling signing up individually or building a team so drop me a message if you are interested. Gives me something on the calendar to train for and a big crew in market cities do it together. Should do the trick ;)
OP, my bad. This makes this problem simpler to solve. The key is just to get yourself out in your workout clothes. You mention you lack a motivator and a routine. You can start a simple habit and find a new motivator along the way. To find new motivators, trying new outdoor activities is a good way.
-Start a simple habit
Just start and things will work out their ways. We can start from small, like 15 min running in mornings/evenings. As you were a hurdle track athlete, intensive running may be more attracting to you.
-Try new outdoor activities
Speed was what you pursued. Have you tried cycling? Cycling in groups can be fun. Also, hiking is also a good way to hang out with friends. I assume the need to stay with friends is very important to you. Group outdoor activities can cover that.
up for a class already. I'll either cancel or take the missed class penalty. Would be great to hear your stories!
I got preworkout (without creatine just caffeine) for morning workouts. Idk if it’s placebo or not but drinking a glass while I’m getting dressed convinces me I’m going to feel good not shitty on the treadmill.
Funnily enough MBA 1, I was an athlete in college. So yeah, I know what it's like, but the lack of routine is probably what I'm missing the most. My motivation used to be competition...now that the competition is gone (and I've looked for it on the last 6 years since graduating, but haven't found anything I'm as passionate about as hurdles), idk what my motivator could be anymore. Self loathing does not work for me haha
i have been working out 530 am 3x a week for the past 2 months. the first few weeks were the hardest. but i believed the progress and gains would be so much worth it. and i was right. so what keep me going to the gym is i am addicted with the results that i have been getting.
