What if you took one of the freelance roles, kept looking and when approached by a new recruiter then you can tell them you are working and don’t have to mention the laid off part anymore?
*say
You don't have to tell them you were laid off. Part of our severance package is usually that you can say you are still employed for job search purposes, on LinkedIn, etc. for x amount of weeks.
Don't bring it up at all.

You don’t have to lie, you just don’t have to mention it.
If those companies aren’t willing to consider the circumstances and focus on your body of work, then you probably don’t want to work for them anyway.

I would tell them you started your own business or went to work for yourself.

I see your point. I would argue that those taking advantage of you are 1) doing it to others and 2) aren’t really looking to hire long-term anyways.

Hey are the freelance offers for a greater salary? If so, would you be open to those?
I personally started working freelance and much prefer it to permanant roles.
If you don't like them, you could take a freelance role and transition into permanent afterwards at that company or another one

@LA 1: you’re right. My company laid off over 100 people in one day (more than 10%) because of Covid-19. And that’s the reason given in my termination letter. But somehow there is still a prejudice around layoffs.
Under normal circumstances, I’d say I needed a change and had been there too long, which is all true. But they’d be suspicious given the timing.
We’re in the middle of a pandemic and millions of people have been laid off. Does it really matter if we’ve been furloughed vs them having to steal us away from other agency?
I’m asking 😞
Unreal.
