I’m five years into this game and I still get panicky before client calls... All calls, really. How do I get over this?

1) remind yourself that you work for a top consultancy and you’re there because you have something to offer — people want to hear what you have to say, so if it helps, think of it as an opportunity to teach them something new (a la your high school history teacher) 2) you can’t control peoples reaction to you, you can only do your best, so focus on you not their reaction to you 3) practice and run towards the discomfort until it is more comfortable Some also believe in toastmasters, coaching, etc. I did not find them helpful — I found self reflection and practice more helpful.

I always remember that most of the time we are NOT saving lives and no one loses their life or arm or leg. It's just a call/mtg. Be prepared as best you can and enjoy the ride. As prior poster said what's the worst that happens? You are wrong? Then learn from that and be better next time. Not saying I am not nervous or stressed before some meetings but I don't let it take over...

20yrs In and yes sometimes with my ELT I do too. It never stops. Sometimes you prep and sometimes you just can’t but you need to lean back on your experience and trust yourself.

Meditation? Therapy? Not sure what would work for you. Maybe even living through your mental worst case scenario once or twice to see that it isn’t the end of the world? Along the lines of the last one, you could check out stoicism, which is probably not exactly what you think it is: A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy https://www.amazon.com/dp/0195374614

I used to have that problem, the way I solved it was by getting to know the people better, I’m shy with people or I could get stressed out by people I don’t know but I’m very open with friends and people who I know better, do the same, get to know your client at the end they’re just normal persons like you.

Do you know your stuff and prepare somewhat before these calls?

I do prepare, but I don’t feel like I “know my stuff" in any particular area as I’ve always been a utility player. Maybe that’s the issue.

The best advice I ever received is “nobody else knows what the hell they are doing either.” As soon as I embraced that my days got a lot easier.

Op yea for sure and 5 years in you are a SC probably so it’s expected that you are a SME in something or getting close to that.

I went to a therapist for some of my fears/stressors and she told me to take deep breaths and give myself positive remarks when I feel myself getting nervous. It’s a way to help re-train the brain...although it def doesn’t fix it overnight

I’ve just accepted the fact that I will be nervous. Once you own that, and are comfortable feeling uncomfortable, it no longer a big deal.

i just had an excellent review with my supervisors. we are aligned i am ready to be promoted. i will be moving from project manager to senior project manager. the catch; my company has laid off 75% of its staff, and cut our salaries by 25%. timing is unclear, since we work in the live entertainment space. what is fair to ask for? i have 7 years work force experience, am the only one in my position, touch every creative deliverable the agency makes, and updated and streamlined 10+ processes.

I would suggest a 14 day quarantine on all folks from outer states and a 30 day one for those from hot spot disaster states.
