I’m from London and in the midst of preparing for the NYS bar exams in Feb. I was wondering if any qualified attorneys have any tips for obtaining employment in NY as a foreign qualified lawyer?

I’ve been trying to go the other way. The immigration climate right now is definitely making it difficult. I’ve been talking to a lot of attorneys who made the switch and their advice has been to get a job at a firm in your current city and then try for a secondment at their overseas office. Good luck!

A1– would love to hear your experience trying to go the other way. I’m also looking to make a transition from DC to London in the next year or so. I work at a firm that has a big presence in London, but I’m a litigator (and love litigation). Any resources or keen insights?

Have you studied in the US? As a foreign qualified attorney who currently works in the US, my suggestion would be start your search ASAP. Don’t wait. Target UK firms that have a shop in the NY/ DC area. Your experience here will be valuable after you go back to the UK as well. I’d also target other large big law firms that have a strong London presence. I’m sure you’ll be able to find something. I have a bunch of friends who worked in the NY area and went back to London or other countries to work after a few years.

Well, prior to my LLB, I attended sixth form and dabbled in extra-curricular activities all pertaining to the legal field. Personally, I do know a couple of foreign qualified lawyers who are now second/third year associates who have explained to me, first hand their experiences. I’m actually going to sit the BTT as my passion has always been to be a barrister. I interned for a solicitors firm in Pimlico which basically emphasised the fact that I wanted to do the BPTC/BTT rather than the LPC.

Try Dentons. Their brand is international collaboration. If you have experience and contacts in another country where they have an office, you’ll stand out.

Which Uni? If Oxbridge, LSE, King’s, you can prob get a job in capital markets at one of the V25 firms that maintains NY and London presence in both (eg, DPW, Latham, Shearman, Sidley, etc) since so much cross border work

I went to Bristol but live in London and that seems to be the consensus regarding firms with international offices. I will definitely look into it and thank you for your response!

How do you deal with toxic masculinity in the workplace? I work with a lot of great people, but there are a handful of men that are so aggressive and downright sexist. I have had my boss blame me for small mistakes he’s made and refuse to discuss my performance or a raise. There are also men outside of my team who tell me how to do my job when they do not understand marketing. Is any of this remotely normal, or should I cut my losses and start job hunting?

How early is too early to go in-house? Clerkship and 1.5-2 years at firm with high billables and very unhappy. Is it a disservice to make a move so early on?

Had a full on hormonal-induced breakdown earlier tonight. I know the underlying issue is the combination of: running my own household (taking care of myself, apartment, and my two adorable turtles), working full-time+ in big law, and studying for the UBE when not doing any of the above. Just feeling overwhelmed right now and would greatly appreciate any words of advice and/or encouragement. Thank you all :))

Please help! I have been looking at options outside my firm and yesterday an in house counsel messages me saying he was moving to outside counsel and wanted me to join his external legal team. Has anyone ever experienced that type of transition? What should I ask? I am not sure if he is started his own firm and looking for an associate or for a partner and I am concerned about malpractice insurance and the fact we are located in different states. It is a company with multiple brands/clients.

About that imposter syndrome. Anyone still struggle with it? Been a litigator about 10 yrs now & some days, I don’t know if I’m actually any good at this. I work hard, and I think I am probably as smart as the next lawyer, but affirmation is hard to come by in this field. (That is, unless you’re a maIe who yells to the four winds how fantastic you are to the point where people inevitably start regurgitating the same info). Not sure how to shake this need for affirmation of my worth as a lawyer.

Just a bit of a rant - I’m back to the office after a prolonged absence (a week in the hospital and six weeks of leave due to illness) and people keep commenting positively on my weight. I lost about 30 lbs in 7 weeks due to being sick, and I’m just starting to get an appetite back again. I’m still dealing with some health stuff but more or less had to go back as I can’t afford to be on employment insurance anymore. I know the comments are well-intentioned but I hate it 🙃
