I’m genuinely curious as to what life is like as a consultant. Is it as glorious as youtubers make it out to be? Do you guys get to travel everywhere and claim meals as business expense?

If you mean travel to New Jersey on a red eye flight and expense a tasteless salad at the Newark airport, then yes!

Airport food always sucks. Better to just drink 🍻

switched to consulting a long while ago. I find a lot of people have larger egos than we should - I don’t feel like this job is any more glamorous than audit. still showing fun excel sheets to high up individuals. only difference is they like me more as a consultant than they would as an auditor lol. but there’s a ton of travel and I been eating (a little too) good and love the mass amounts of points I’m accruing from my marriott card. just hit that yung platinum elite last month 😭😭

like

Must be nice to be able to accrue points like that!

OP, are you an investment banker? Is it as awesome as depicted in American Psycho?

Not IB :(

Lol no it’s not glorious 😂. We do get to travel for work and expense meals on those trips.

That sounds wonderful enough 🥲

Yes if you don’t mind the hours and lifestyle

It’s not glorious. Yeah you get (read - have to) travel. And your meals are paid for (subject to your firms policies). But pretty often the locations aren’t great. Waking up at 4am to catch a flight on a regional jet (no upgrades exist on this plane) to Ohio, followed by an hours drive into basically Amish country where the fine dining option is Bob Evans has happened to me more than once for months at a time. The perks you hear about are upgrades to first class on your flights, airline/hotel/car miles. At the end of the day though, those are pretty tangible benefits - you can get all of those by spending some $$. Sure sometimes you get to go to nicer places too. What I like about it is that there’s better food available. You’re generally working late at the clients office, so you don’t have a ton of time to check out whatever cool stuff might actually be there. Personally, I try to plan a week where I stay over the weekend to check it out a little bit - but again this just works out to a slightly subsidized weekend trip. You too can buy the same experience.

Yes.

Yup it totally depends on industry... if you're in industrial goods or doing federal consulting.. while you still travel and expense things.. it won't be glamorous lol.. cant go to a fancy restaurant or hotel if the middle of no where client location doesn't support it.. but have had friends ball out in Mexico city or nyc.. so very dependent

Lol op.. it was the worst 2 nights of my consulting career.. barely slept

+1 Not entirely depicting what we do (or rather how we do it), but you will get the idea

Yes.

🥺 must be nice

bruh its covid no travel but i loved consulting when I traveled week in weekout Free upgrades, free drinks, good times with coworkers. Some people complain about being with people late, I'm easygoing and like to sit back and relax with the team

Sometimes travel is not easy like it should be. I had a $1200 credit (b class flight from Paris to NY) from American Airlines that I was told was good for any trip. After 30+ hours between call backs and different desks, they tell me because the trip originated in euros I can only apply it in the US. Fine, but then after another hour on hold, I hear that it can only be redeemed in person at a ticket counter in Paris. I live in NY. Was never told of these stipulations before. Never again AA

Can I be fired for refusing to travel right now? Don’t want to due to covid risk. Raised this concern but was told I might just have to anyways. Can they fire me if I just don’t go? I’ve said very clearly I will not go, and don’t think they’re going to accept that answer.

I am extremely conflicted.
