unlikely for your current employer to bump your pay if you get PMP midway. they’ll give u a congrats and work you harder.
changing companies is usually the way to go
Pro
It can def be either or and definitely the industry.
I saw a role that stated pmp preferred but then the salary was listed as 80-90k. Agree I also know companies that paid for the pmp as well. I also know pms getting paid well without a pmp sometimes experience can warrant the same outcomes. A few pms would rather transition into operations, I would advise become a pm first (everything falls on you & they will blame you) & then see if you really enjoy it. Some after 1 year they went into account management. Good luck either way 😇
I'm in your same situation. I've been a PjC / BA for 3.8 yrs. Moved companies 5 months ago. A recruiter called with a 20k pay bunp from 70k to 90k. I told the new company I expected to be a PjM shortly after earning PMP. I did get PMP & CSM in October, and nothing changed immediately. I heard through grapevine they'll bump my title and pay soon to 100k, but no change in role with client project.
Anyway, I agree with the other person. Best thing to do is to move companies for a pay bump. Never tell them your current salary. Promotions rarely come from certifications alone, but they're still worth doing if you're interested in the field.
This recruiter reached out to me in March with an offer is didn't like, then again in June with the offer I did like.
This was all before the market cooled down.
I used to get a couple DM's per week with interview offers.
It's like 1x per month now.
I have put a lot of time into my LinkedIn profile.
I’m an IT Project Manager for a Gaming company. I have 7+ years of experience with a Google project management cert, Scrum Master cert, and Lean six sigma. My base is 115k not including RSUs, total comp 180+.
It’s years of experience, types of projects you’ve done Vs. what’s currently in demand. You will have to either boomerang (leave your company for a short time for a higher salary then return requesting more) or leave all together. In my experience unless you were guaranteed x in raises in Y amount of time you won’t get it.
You'll have to switch companies most likely. I can't see an employer giving that large a bump for PMP. At my previous firm (engineering consultancy) we added 2.5-5k to annual but it depended on cert. Professional Engineers would get $5-8k
Agreed. I was making $75k as a Structural Engineer with my PE. I made the switch to be a PM/owner’s rep at another company- stood strong in not sharing my current salary or what I was looking for until they gave me a number on their own. It was 102k so I accepted 😊 I don’t have a PMP but my PE had weight for sure; I plan to get my CCM eventually. Good luck!!
I don't have any advice. But congratulations on the new role!!!
Mine was almost immediately
