How many days is it acceptable to have 0-3 billable hours when you know a storm is coming?
I’m a 2017 associate in NYC biglaw. I logged approx. 2300 billable hours in 2019. Is that light, normal or heavy in the biglaw market for RE associates at my level? Thanks in advance for thoughts.
What does your work schedule look like (roughly) if you are aiming for 1900 billable hours?
What does your firm allow you to count towards non-billable hours other than standard business development?
Just got into a full time grad program for international affairs that starts in January of 2021. (completely changing careers). I need to stay working at my firm until then and possible after to get the billable hours for my CPA. I passed all 4 exams and I refuse to give let that go to waste...... how do I tell my employer I'll be going to school in a way that they'll still let me work part time? Extremely nervous they're just going to let me go.
Real talk: does anyone else find all the bragging about super high billable hours kind of sad? There is more to life and it just reads like life not being lived. 😔
What is your hourly billable rate and title?
I’d be curious to hear about people’s chargeable/billable hours. What are your goals vs actual, best/worst years, etc. I’ve only ever worked at one regional firm so my knowledge is fairly narrow.
Which offer would you choose? 1) $135k, 1900 billable hours, formidable and growing mid-sized firm in the city; or 2) $145k, 2000 billable hours, biglaw but not a prestigious one?
What happens if you don’t hit your billable hours? I am a first-year that had a very slow February and slow start to March. I’ve been reaching out to various teams for work but things seem slow now & I’m worried that I’m not going to hit my 1800 target.
What the most outrageous billable hours you can confirm at your firm? Just learned from a partner that the highest billers at my firm came in at 3600, 3500 and 3200. Seems fishy to me.
Ah! If the clients ever realize the number of billable hours wasted on making slides just ‘look’ pretty!!!!
I am a first year associate in Biglaw. I have been put on an improvement plan to increase my billable hours. My supervisors have commented that have not been getting work because I need to improve my efficiency. I am willing to do what it takes to improve but wonder how to improve my hours when no one seems willing to give me a second chance.
Anyone else completely mail it in after giving their 2 weeks? Major senioritis for me rn. Probably had 2 billable hours today. Maybe
Is 1850 billable hours in a major market that much busier than 1850 in a non-major market? Specifically for litigation
If you keep track of your non-billable time, how much detail do you put in your time entries?
This may be just a naive/dumb question, but how do you relax when you’ve got a really stressful file? I’m a junior and I’ve been putting in ~10ish billable hours a day recently, which is more than I’m used to. The evenings (post-8pm) are generally my time to decompress - read a book, watch dumb tv, whatever - but it’s been all work lately until 10 or 11pm and I struggle to go straight from work to bed. Any insight on what everyone else does?
16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.
It’s been a hot minute. Thai Basil Chicken Lettuce Wraps with Hoisin Sauce (Keto). My pre-covid work clothes are now loose on me. I’ll have to buy a new work wardrobe wherever that may be. I quit my job and am back in school. Goodbye tax, goodbye busy seasons, goodbye billable hours.. 😁
“A new study suggests that almost half of those hospitalized with COVID-19 have mild or asymptomatic cases.”
EY - ladies, what to wear to the holiday party?!
How likely would your agency be to sponsor a visa right now? I feel like it’s a bit of a lost cause. For context, I’m a Canadian looking to make a move back to London at an AD level (worked there previously as a Sr AM on a Tier 5).
Anyone consistently sign multi year leases just to get the rent down? During covid I signed a 2.5 year with 6 months free to guarantee the price and am thinking of doing it again when it expires
Everyone and their mama has been raving about air fryers. They said it's a healthier alternative to deep frying. Any recommendations? I want one for my holiday meals. I am currently looking at this one on Macys. https://www.macys.com/shop/product/crux-6.3-quart-digital-touchscreen-electric-air-fryer-created-for-macys?ID=11304871&pla_country=US&CAGPSPN=pla&cm_mmc=Google_SH_PLA_Cookware-_-GS_Cookware_PLA_Crux-_-293719126716-_-pg1050674350_m_kclickid__kenshoo_clickid__KID_EMPTY_1546922786_61770717587_293719126716_aud-37409341359
Alixpartners fishes - have you started traveling again? Do you foresee your travel requirements reducing post covid
Venting Being an experienced hire and making 96k at 31 just feels like a joke. So hard to find any motivation or do anything above the bare minimum. Already have hefty savings and other income, so just wanted to vent a bit
My lawyer mentioned that I could start working with my new employer on h1b transfer receipt “if I choose to do so”. Or I could wait for the actual transfer to happen(premium processing) and wait for physical copy. What should I do?
Husband is looking at KPMG, EY, PWC, Accenture for compliance and audit positions. Anyone know the travel policies post covid?
Leaving my law firm and have 13.5 days vacation time left over and it’s 6 weeks until I start my new job. Do I take off a week or two before giving my two weeks notice or just take the check? I’m worried because work was slow at the start of COVID and I didn’t work full time for a few weeks, so wondering if they can take vacation time from me because of this missed time?
Starting at Monitor Deloitte as SC next week! Any advice for someone brand new to consulting (previously an engineer who did an MBA to pivot)? Especially starting virtually! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

how do you make yourself likeable enough to get lunch buddies? i find it suffocating/shallow to talk about "travel plans" "what you did on the weekend" "how much did you pay for that" 😬
How people with small kids are managing WFH? I have 18 month old and both of us are in consulting. It's getting almost impossible to keep kid engaged and work. Interested what other parents are doing
Culture/workload/hours between B4 vs mid-tier?
Congrats to all the folks who got promoted this year! Happy for everyone but still feeling a little blue.. was really hoping to make it to the next level this year. Looking for some advice.. do I slog it out for one more year in current big 4 or do I try to jump to another firm at the next level?
