I'm getting really tired of well-off and powerful white dudes in Tech complaining about cancel culture.

I’m scared of what cancel culture could do to future acceptance. I’m not white, but am LGBT.

What’s considered acceptable now isn’t always going to be what’s acceptable in the future and I’m scared for how it could impact future acceptance of different non-traditional ideas.

For example, growing up, it was considered taboo to be LGBT. But because I feel like it as it was OK to evolve and have those discussions openly, people could feel safe to discuss and eventually accept folks that were gay. As recently as 2000, less than 50% of folks in the US were supportive of LGBT folks. I’m just afraid that cancel culture stops the advance towards acceptance of future issues.

If folks are going to be canceled for just having these discussions, I’m not sure how folks can evolve. Let’s acknowledge that not everyone is perfect and allow folks to have open dialogue without fear that their livelihood, job prospects and entire life will be taken away.

Me too, and I’m a white dude. People are incredibly poor at self-awareness is what I’ve learned this decade.

like

This isn’t new. In the past decade of my life - I have noticed people are not good at self-awareness.

Agreed - but I feel like cancel culture for things done over 10 years ago is a bit obnoxious. People change, people evolve, canceling someone for something they may have done that long ago is imo too much, granted they don't have the same beliefs and thoughts in current day

like

Cancel culture doesn’t exist. Nobody, especially not white people, has been canceled in any meaningful way. Being held accountable for your actions is a natural consequence it is not the equivalent of being canceled.

like

That is laughable

like

Do you think cancel culture is a net good?

No I think “cancelling” someone generally disregards the complexities that actually exist in life. That being said, blaming everything on “cancel culture” and “woke epidemic” and “political correctness” also has the same effect, on the opposite side. You gotta meet somewhere in the middle

Client recently offered me a job for an open req (industry eq SM). The work is flexible, the req is just to get me in the door but I decide what I want to work on (which I trust to be true). Much better culture, wlb, etc., but I’d be taking a 100k pay cut and be an IC with no team. Is it worth taking a step back in pay and responsibilities, or does it seem possible to get all in one?
