I’m going through interviews currently and I’m curious y’all’s take-
When they ask you what your expected salary is… do you tell them a number or ask for their budget first? Will I screw myself over by giving them a range and close out any possibility to negotiate??

“I’m reluctant to quote a specific number until we can chat more and I better understand the full scope of the role. Based on my understanding of the role so far and my X, Y, and Z experience/qualifications I’d be looking for a range of $A-B. What is your budget for the role?”

This makes sure you’re aligned to a certain range, doesn’t lock yourself in at that moment in time, and gives you a wide range to negotiate up to the higher end.

The range is one I’ve heavily researched, rounded up to the high end, and marked up slightly, usually a total of $20k range.

Avoid asking yes or no questions unless they are super dodgy, in which case I ask “is the budget above $C?” (midway between A and B above) and press for a yes or a no.

Honestly, any company that’s not transparent about salary form the jump is a huge red flag imho.

I always say “I’m open to negotiate based on my experience and skillsets, but I’m curious if you could provide a budget for this role?”

Have a number ready, but ask them what their budget is for someone with your experience.

I first do my research on Glassdoor, then I take my salary and ask at least 20% over my current salary, but if on Glassdoor you found they pay more then that is what I ask

If you do your research and hit the right range it will be beneficial . Shows you are at the right level of seniority and signals you are not a waste of time . But yes always say money is not that important blabla bla

Ugh I hate this question. Sometimes I wish I could respond with “I expect the highest salary that you are willing to pay me, what would that be?” 🙃🙃

But in all seriousness, I also do intensive research on salary prior to the screening call since this always gets asked fairly early on the interview process. If I can find reported salaries on Glassdoor or levels.fyi then I use that as a baseline. Then I’ll lookup average salaries based on a combination of job title, company/industry, and location to determine some sort of range that’s realistic in the current job market. I usually pad the lower end of my salary range with a number that I would be very comfortable with accepting. Although I fully expect the higher end of my salary range as something I intend to negotiate with so I can land somewhere in the middle.
