I'm going to admit I'm a hopeless "ABCD" so please pardon me for asking a dumb question but can someone explain how and why cousins are arranged married in Muslim households?
- Like how far apart must the relation be?
- Is it only a Pakistan thing? A Subcontinent thing? Or World Over?
- In India and elsewhere all my cousins call each other brothers and sisters basically. Is that a Hindu thing only?
🤷

It's fairly common in South India.. don't think it's so much religion as it's a regional cultural thing. For example, this is a frequent thing in the Parsi community as well as in certain brahmin sects in the south.

In some cases, girls marry uncles (mom’s younger brother) as well. I always thought it's in cases where the uncle and girl in question are of similar age but recently found out otherwise.

Apparently Pakistan has one of the highest indecencies of kids born with genetic defects and it’s largely because of inter-family marriages. As many as 50% of marriages are within families.

On the other hand, one of my friends from AP told me even since she became aware, it was understood by her that she was to marry her mom’s brother and her only escape was studying her ass off and getting out, which she did. Apparently when finally being asked that question directly, she refused and her grandfather cut all ties with her parents and her until the day he died.

Just bad all around!

like

Your friend should be incredibly proud of herself for doing that.

That’s correct. It does not happen in Hindus

like

Yes agree. Does not happen much.Mostly I have seen people marrying outside their parents’ gotra in case of arranged marriage.

Not a good idea though. Genetic diseases spreads through these inter family alliances. Better marry someone who is not related to. Chances of having better genes goes up.

Southern India (especially Tamizh Hindus) follow this too buddy.

Yes. Or mom's brothers child.

Thanks McK1. Didn't know this even had a name.

Wow! I thought the relationship had to be a bit further apart.
Sounds like incest to me in my upbringing but I suppose that's just my upbringing/culture... 😑

So in families where this does happen, do you all not consider your cousins brother/sister equivalent growing up? Is it more of a "friendship" growing up than a familial link?

The Arab world has the highest genetic disorders due to the inbreeding.

this doesn't happen in north india. only in south & parts of west india

Should I take my girlfriend back after she drunkenly kissed a random guy at a bar?
We were at a bar with friends and I left the bar because I was ready to go home. She stayed with friends and I later found out that she kissed a random guy and her friend had to break it up. We are 3 months in and I feel betrayed. She has assured to me that it was not cheating and just a mistake. She loves me and wants to stay together and swore to do better. I’m torn because I feel like all trust is gone.

Do you go see your parents when they are getting surgery?
I've never been afraid of surgery before and my dad's had a bunch (from military). He lives a few states away but I usually get to see him quite often. He's only in his 40s and my mom is with him. The surgery he's about to have is considered high risk. I'm not worried or anything, but it's it customary to go see them when they're having a major surgery? He'll be in-patient for at least a week. Sounds I go after and help my mom? WWYD?

I have hesitation that I’ll be a good dad (my childhood wasn’t the greatest, and I realize that’s holding me back) and now I’m wondering if I’m just too old to even consider it. Any advice, questions, comments, criticism welcome. Guess I just need to talk about this.

I recently ended a 5 year relationship to someone I thought I was going to marry and everyday I worry I made the wrong decision. At the end of the day though our values weren’t in alignment - he became very conservative over the years (or more open about his perspectives on it).. such that he thought being gay is something not to be discussed/ encouraged, abortion should be illegal etc. And just felt an inconsistency with his level of compassion/empathy that was confusing bc it felt hot and cold

He’s not willing to commit to the other women because he’s not over me.

Spouse is a state department employee and currently overseas. Hoping this doesn’t turn controversial. Should I be teaching my young kids to read Quran in Arabic (so learn a new language just to read Quran but no value otherwise), or skip Arabic and have them read transliteration (so like Alhamdu lilahi) or third option to just read in English the translation where they will actually understand? I mean, I spend 100 dollars a week on a tutor to teach them Arabic. My parents spent thousands and I can barely read it now and prefer transliteration.thoughts?
