Zindagi jhand ba, lekin phir bhi ghamand ba.
It's fairly common in South India.. don't think it's so much religion as it's a regional cultural thing. For example, this is a frequent thing in the Parsi community as well as in certain brahmin sects in the south.
In some cases, girls marry uncles (mom’s younger brother) as well. I always thought it's in cases where the uncle and girl in question are of similar age but recently found out otherwise.
Not with majority of hindu population
Apparently Pakistan has one of the highest indecencies of kids born with genetic defects and it’s largely because of inter-family marriages. As many as 50% of marriages are within families.
On the other hand, one of my friends from AP told me even since she became aware, it was understood by her that she was to marry her mom’s brother and her only escape was studying her ass off and getting out, which she did. Apparently when finally being asked that question directly, she refused and her grandfather cut all ties with her parents and her until the day he died.
Just bad all around!
Your friend should be incredibly proud of herself for doing that.
That’s correct. It does not happen in Hindus
Yes agree. Does not happen much.Mostly I have seen people marrying outside their parents’ gotra in case of arranged marriage.
Here, this might help

Not a good idea though. Genetic diseases spreads through these inter family alliances. Better marry someone who is not related to. Chances of having better genes goes up.

Southern India (especially Tamizh Hindus) follow this too buddy.
Yes. Or mom's brothers child.
Thanks McK1. Didn't know this even had a name.
Wow! I thought the relationship had to be a bit further apart.
Sounds like incest to me in my upbringing but I suppose that's just my upbringing/culture... 😑
So in families where this does happen, do you all not consider your cousins brother/sister equivalent growing up? Is it more of a "friendship" growing up than a familial link?
The Arab world has the highest genetic disorders due to the inbreeding.
this doesn't happen in north india. only in south & parts of west india
