I'm going to ask about a raise this week. Has anyone tried to claim they have an offer from a different firm to give themselves a little extra leverage during the negotiation process? If I'm going for a 5-8% raise, how high should I say my "competing" offer is?

It's risky to say you have a competing offer, 50-50 they just tell you they can't match and you should take the other offer. Most times even when people have competing offers, the advice is not to try and negotiate with your current firm because then they'll always see you as one foot out the door. You can say you believe the market value for the role is xyz and use that to justify the raise instead. You should also be prepared to explain the ways you've contributed/demonstrated good performance to earn the raise as well

Appreciate the advice

Be prepared to leave if you say this, had a friend get laid off doing this

He had an offer too but it was not nearly as good as he portrayed it

The “competing offer” normally is asked to be provided as proof so best not to lie

like

Don’t do this. They will require you to submit the other offer if they are willing to match it.

For those who have gone through Mck First Round/Final Round - could you talk about how the interview took place? I'm trying to figure out how to pivot out of my current job. My department is in utter chaos, which has just become completely unmanageable. I'm looking for front-end web design work, and work from home. I am a strong designer and basically set up landing pages for large companies on a proprietary CMS in our company. If anyone knows of places I could apply? I'm not trying to reinvent myself as I do artwork on the side and would rather grow that business and get out of the chaos of fortune 500.

I have an estranged relationship with my sister. I haven’t had a relationship with her in 13+ years, and haven’t even seen her in about 5 years. We had a really bad falling out and I never really carried for her as a person.
