I’m going to make a simple website for a local business as some freelance work. They don’t even need a database or anything just a cool looking frontend (a glorified online poster essentially). What would be reasonable to charge them for this? Granted this is in the Midwest for a small business (whom I’m also friends with). I was going to ask for like $500. I think I could probably make something that’s clean and has satisfying animations. Is this too much, too little, or just right?

For web design work it's common to charge per page. Depends on the size but you're in a reasonable ballpark

Not exactly relevant but wondering if you have any tips how to find freelance jobs in front end?

Thanks

Show them how to use Wix, save your self the dev time and save them the $. Most small companies aren't prepared to pay the prices of real developers and designers.

Sweet, gotta do what you feel is best. If you're enjoying it that's all that matters. Dealing directly with customers is a great bridge to starting your own business or joining a cool startup. Enjoy the ride!

I feel like you are in a decent range. I've researched it because that's something I'd like to get into, but I'd use WordPress, that is just a personal preference for me because I have experience it WP. I'd do the page so that you can have something to add to your portfolio. Then they'd come to you for other work if they need it. Give them a discount if they decide to upgrade.

I did this starting out, and charged about $1,500 for a React frontend (about 4-5 pages from a Figma design). Wouldn’t bother with the service contract. Just specify in an email instead and do service work at an hourly rate (say $40 per hour). DM me for more details, e.g. to view the actual site etc.

Thanks I appreciate it!!

Someone mentioned Wix, I totally agree - use some common service or content management framework that they can use themselves tk make further updates. So figure out what your time is worth ($100 / hr?) and provide them with consulting services to select content management framework and maybe do initial setup for them, get a custom domain name etc. Because all that stuff isn't going to just magically appear once they launch the editor.

I will update their SQL or website as necessary for three years. My spouse is an employment law attorney, and she will draft a contract that will state I am not responsible for maintaining the website past 3 years. Plus I’ll put a stipulation for like how many hours of maintenance I’m willing to do. Seems a little extra, but honestly it protects me and protects them. They know exactly what they’re getting, nothing less, sometimes more :)

How do you all deal with the guilt of leaving a comany/ team? I have been working at Microsoft for 1 year now, and seriously considering moving. I find the code base to be very legacy and I mostly work on obscure bugs that I spend so much time on, mostly due to navigating this large code base and not having much docs to refer to. Hence I find the job slightly unsatisfying, and that I could learn more elsewhere. However, I love the wlb, the team and company culture. The guilt stops my applying.
