I’ve been practicing trusts and estates in State A for the last 4 years. My husband just got his dream job (high paying, lots of career opp for him) in State B. We’re still deciding what makes most sense for our family, but we’re leaning toward heading to State B. Anyone have any experience with this - moving states when your practice area is so state specific? I’m worried how I’ll market myself/find a new job/start over. I work with a family member in my current job, so that’s another layer...

I’m in big law and went on flex time (paid less, expectations of billed time decreased) well before COVID, due to family obligations. Anyone else here in the same boat?

I’m wondering if others have raised their flex time status as a way to kindly decline work if it gets to be too much... with big law layoffs and furloughs abound, speaking up feels like a catch-22. I’m the breadwinner, grateful to be employed, and trying to stay sane.

Interviewed with firm. Crazy close to home. Firm does my specialty. Seems like a good fit (I have ptsd from previous firms so gun shy). I think I got low balled salary wise. Like $25k less than what I am making now. I would have 4+ years more experience than any of their associates. Their most senior associate has like 4 kids and has a stay at home wife. I find it hard to believe they are paying that associate as low as they offered me. Probably going to counter but would it be wrong to compare

I supervise a team of 15-20 attorneys. Most of them have more years of experience than me (mid-aughts grad). I have 4 new hires who are about 2 months in that call/email/message me about everything and do not make an effort to find answers for themselves even though we have many resources available. I am trying to be patient because they are new to the team (not to the profession) but I do have my own workload and others to supervise. How can I politely suggest they try to be self sufficient?

Just realized a firm partner has a pattern of treating female employees poorly. Except for the associate who brings in the big money, of course. But it's a trend, and the only reason he doesn't take it as far with me as he does with others is because I do EVERYTHING and he is screwed if I just up and leave. If you've experienced this, how did you deal with it? And yes I am trying to leave, the job market here is a little tough right now.

I desperately need advice. About 4 months ago, I interviewed for my dream job at a firm that sounds like it would be the perfect fit and wonderful to work for (Firm 1). I followed up, but never got a definite response one way or another. I then recently interviewed with Firm 2 which also seems great but is not as geographically desirable. Recently found out I’m pregnant. Husband and I are so excited, but we weren’t exactly planning this. I’m young (26) & only a 1st year assoc (started sept 2019). We were planning on waiting at least another year or two, b/c I love my job & firm & hoped to be more senior/established before needing to take leave. I feel like the people who hate their careers are much more vocal than the people who are enjoying themselves. I’m a first year in big law, and I honestly just feel grateful to have a stable income for the first time in my life. My work life balance is good because I just draw boundaries and stop working at my cutoff time unless an emergency and make time for fitness/ wellness/ meditation. But I guess my Q is — where are the happy lawyers? Am I doomed?

Hey all, I’m having a rough time at my office and am wondering if anyone has gone through something similar and how it was handled. The male shareholders I work with say things that I know they would never say to me if I were male. I’ve thought about approaching HR to figure out how to get these shareholders to be more mindful of what they’re saying, but I’m also worried about being the “problematic” associate and being iced out because of it. Input appreciated! As a second year associate, I have a reasonable 1800 billable requirement and make $70k, but I don’t feel aligned with the firm. I want more WLB and don’t care about making partner. I am considering pivoting to a contracts analyst position (glorified doc review) because it’s 100% remote, same pay, has a 40 hour cap (rather than my current minimum!), flexible hours, and no billables or stress. Would this be a bad idea for my career?

In your perspective, what age is ideal for a man to get married? Similarly, what’s the ideal age for women. I know it depends, but if you had to say a rule of thumb and generalize.

There is a partner in our office that routinely discusses associate performance with other associates. For example, she will tell Associate A that Associate B isn’t performing and/or hitting hours, etc. Recently, I learned that she has been discussing “issues” she had with my work product two years ago (I no longer do any work for her). Is this something I should bring up? It bothers me that she is talking about me to others.

Started a new job when I was 3 months pregnant. My probation period will end when I am six months pregnant (September).
