I’m having a hard time staying motivated lately. Really apathetic about everything. Feels like I’m falling into a bad depressive slump. I’m getting more and more behind on work because I just can’t sustain focus for longer than a couple hours at a time. There’s no one to shift my workload to, and as much as the legal industry talks about lawyer mental health, it’s still a taboo topic. I know it’s the pandemic causing this downswing, but I don’t know how to shake myself out of this rut.

Time block your activities. Sandwich your work in between enjoyable tasks, as much as you can. (30, 60 or 90-min work block, then 15-30 min “reward” of a workout, walk around the block, reading something for fun, etc) Pare down to the absolute essentials. List out what you need to do daily in your personal life (personal hygiene, 3 meals and 100oz water, workout or gentle movement like a walk or stretching, and sleeping 7 hours): put this on a checklist and focus on meeting only these. Do the same for work; what is mission critical and what are low priority tasks that can be automated, done less frequently or altogether abandoned? Suggest making a priority list of 2-5 things that are each day’s priority, and focusing on those. Take stock of your energy levels. Are you better in the morning? At night? Shift your workload to lean into those productivity times so you aren’t fighting with yourself to be productive when you just... can’t. Be gentle with yourself. We’re all feeling it these days, some more acutely than others. Do you have a therapist? If not, highly recommend telehealth.

When I was really depressed last year I didn’t even realize how bad I was. I had never been depressed in my life but the covid isolation affected me a lot. I was in the same rut as you, just couldn’t get motivated to do anything at all and was falling behind at work. My suggestions that definitely helped me recover almost back to my old self now: 1. Therapist (I do it twice a week). 2. Some form of exercise (can easily just be a 20 min walk). 3. Avoid really bad food with high sugar content, no exceptions. 4. Consider medication. Takes some time to get the right one, but I’m on Wellbutrin now and it really helps. 5. Get emerged in something else before work books, computer games, music, other hobbies. 6. Ask to work from the office a day or two a week or mix up your location of work. WFH every day all day really got to me. I hope this helps! The legal profession is 20 years behind when it comes to mental health. You just need to get the help yourself and don’t be shy about putting your mental health first.

Are you allowed any office access? I found the WFH was contributing to my lack of focus and I’ve been asking for permission to go in at least once per week so give me a wake up. Thankfully we will be returning to hybrid soon
