I’m in a leveraged finance team in big law in NYC. Class of 2017 so rising seventh. Dislike my practice area and have realized there’s no exits in house from here. Is there a way to retool to an ECVC or M&A / Gen Corp practice? No partnership ambitions here - mostly looking for an exit after a year or two. How much of a class year hit would I have to take?

Also, to answer your question, I think capital markets, especially securities would be a good practice for going to in-house. But capital markets is very slow now.

Thank you so much! DMed!

I think you’ll have to take a large step back in class year at your seniority to change practice areas.

Have you tried looking into general corporate in-house roles? I’ve seen a number of finance attorneys make that pivot in-house.

helpful

Also, happy to tell you about an EC/VC boutique that is looking for a senior attorney to do venture debt. You would also have a chance there to work on venture equity side investments and a range of other general corporate opportunities. DM if you want to learn more.

I have a friend who went to WSGR from Sidley finance but it prob depends on the market

Fi ance team like project finance or debt finance? Thank you.

I’m in a similar group and people exit for banks and sponsors all the time. Why do you think exit is bad?

like

Depends on the market. Similar background as you, and a friend (albeit a bit more junior then) managed to move in 2021. I started trying in 2022 and no luck.

You’re too expensive to re-train for most of the big ECVC places unless you take a class year cut.

I have a friend who went to SEC to retool

I was considering retooling to LevFin for more exit opportunities lol … after surfing through in house jobs for weeks, I can tell you that the majority of well paying ones are for specialist roles (securities, healthcare). General feedback I received was that you need to be prepared to come in as a 2nd year. I’m a rising 8th year so it will suck but it is what it is

Wow that sounds very specialized and hard to get in….

Been offered a role outside of audit. I am an AM and the role is a financial accountant role at a large corporate investment manager.

The salary is the same as what I am currently on, I am due for an increase in August and I would have to pay back half of a signing bonus (quite a large sum) if I were to move now.

I have provisionally accepted the offer but have not yet signed the contract. Is there still room for me to negotiate the terms of pay? The recruiter keeps saying no

Are there any “best practices” as it relates to giving notice? Currently practicing in somewhat of a specialist group and lateraling to re-tool to a practice area I’m more interested in and also relocating to LA (where I’m from), so not necessarily competitive but I’ve been in this group for 3 years and have received very positive feedback on my work and built solid relationships/mentorships so curious if y’all have any pointers to avoid inadvertently “burning bridges” as they say…
