I’ve spent my entire career (30 years) in accounting methods and would definitely recommend it. Accounting methods planning has become a very high profile service with tax reform. You will have the opportunity to provide significant value to clients and interact with National Tax experts on a regular basis. Based on my experience, I think Deloitte’s methods team is better than KPMG’s, but if Deloitte can’t guarantee you a transfer into methods, I would take the KPMG offer.

Go with your your original thought- take the new job. Not same groups but found a job at KPMG in a different group than I’d been working at EY, EY let me transfer and I pushed out my start date at KPMG, but it turned out it was as more than just the work that made me want to leave. Started at KPMG doing same work as after the transfer but I like it better- better team/better fit. Besides not knowing if they will actually transfer you (or if that match will mean you will spend years not getting raises after), you don’t know if you will like/fit the team itself.

Listen to their counter. I did and I ended up staying. The devil you know is better than the one you don't.

BDO 1, that is so not correct

Until you’re in that group you like, these are just words. Transfers need approval from both sides and most often pmd support on both sides. It’s nice he wants to keep you but he probably just doesn’t want the role empty right now

like

Agreed…also, I’m sure you are a good worker and your manager does indeed like you and needs you, so why are they going to help you transfer groups? They aren’t. 🤷🏼‍♂️

like

I had a colleague turn down a job offer based on a manager verbal to allow them to transfer and they never got the transfer. If it’s not in writing it’s worthless. Take the methods job.

A2 consider the difference between loving your manager and being in love with you manager. One is awesome and the other is… complicated. 🙂

Leave!!!! It’s like knowing when a relationship has come to an end and dragging it out. He’s just a manager. Tell him you need things finalized in a week. See how fast they move things.

Why not take the role them boomerang back for higher pay later?

So so true. 😂

Wow this hits home lol. I was literally in this exact position a week ago. I’m a current KPMG employee for what it’s worth. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to hear my two cents

I work in the methods department and I love my job. I’m building really strong project management skills, I get a lot of client facing work, and my projects are interesting. Hours are also great. The only time I worked more than 45 hours a week was during October.

All I can say is I enjoy working at KPMG. Best of luck in whatever you decide!

like

Do you know if your manager has pulled in Partner(s) to back the counter offer? Have they talked to you? I’ve seen people transferred very quickly in situations like this, so if this allows you to get into the group you want, it’s a whole lot less of a hassle to transfer groups than firms (I’ve done both).

like

If you were to change your mind about taking the new job, how you go about communicating that change is key. A prompt, I’m sorry but Deloitte came back with a counter offer that addressed all my concerns is still professional. People at KPMG may be disappointed but it happens all the time. Not showing up for your first day of work with KPMG and ghosting them will burn all the bridges. Don’t do that.

KPMG has very night attrition because the culture is not good. I’m looking to leave myself. Agree with RSM 1

like

I left there 2 years ago after being a boomerang in MTS. Compliance is a neverending carousel of nightmares. Stick to your choice and if someone is pressuring you, ask them if the issue is that they truly believe you were enjoying the work or that they are worried about the impact on themselves. Everyone takes a keen interest when your decisions impact them directly with no thought of what is best for you. Remember Office Space.... "Is this good for the company"

like

If you can get the pay match and move to the other team stay at Deloitte. Kpmg will still be out there

Leave.

You can be “pushed around.” Just go and start in what makes you happy

So, a month ago I was offered a data engineer position at a fintech firm. I was going to accept it. The interview process had taken over a month. Then, at the last minute, an old coworker/friend - who is a manager at FAANG now - randomly offered me a data engineer __contractor__ position at a FAANG. The rate was really good - more than the fintech company was offering as annual salary. Rate was 160/HR and fintech was 275K TC. The benefits are ok - it’s a W2 contractor. But I’m thinking of...

Stay at Deloitte as an M and try for SM promotion in 2023 or try to level up now at another firm? Current base is $185K with 12 YOE. M&A IT. I know M to SM moves across firms are tough. Assuming I can make the transition for argument’s sake, should I invest my free time in the holiday season into making the transition?
