It’s your career. You have to be selfish and do what’s best for YOU!
Do what you think is best for you
Benefits will only keep you happy for so long. Which one has better opportunities?
Pro
Current job (the benefits i care about):
- 3 weeks vacation
- 3.5% 401k match
- $1,000 HSA contribution
- 4 weeks parental leave
New job:
- 13 days vacation, but can also earn more by working overtime (also paid for overtime in either vacation time or Time x 1.5, which is a huge plus in itself)
- 5% thrift savings match (think 401k)
- 15.5% pension
- 2,000 HSA contribution
- 12 weeks parental leave
Both seem to offer good upward mobility. I’m really trying to just settle down and get a normal 40 hours a week job
I personally think working for the government is a dead end and that pension benefit 1. Probably requires you to stay until you retire and 2. Might go bankrupt before you get to use it. Your new job sounds good I would stick it out there and maybe revisit this other one down the road. If it took this long to get back to you from a hiring standpoint, imagine how long it will take to actually get work done in that environment.
I would take that fed govt jobs, because they don’t come be that often. It is no big deal quitting after 2 weeks at new job, just be straight fws what happened and where you are going. Going to a fed govt is totally understandable.
You do what’s best for you.
Are you able to share what the benefits are comparable to your current job?
Government job will be more stable and a pension is really nice to have. As long as you are okay sticking it out in government for the rest your career I with up of go with that one. But also a little hard to give good advice without know more details on the jobs. Aka what is the job and what are you doing. I would find someone you can talk through the details with.
