It's generally customary to not quit in the middle of a busy season - no so much for the firm itself, but for what that will do to your friends on the engagement that will have to pick up your work. I can tell you that I would never hire back someone that quit during busy season without a good reason (I did hire someone back that left to care for a sick family member after that member was in an unfortunate accident), but that's a personal opinion. You'll probably get a question on the date of leaving listed on your resume if you're interviewing at a competitor. Might I suggest having a confidential discussion with experience management to see how they might be able to help you? I have worked with a number of people over the years that were in an overwhelmed or close to burnout mode, and we were able to make things better for many of them. Please do take care of yourself - mental exhaustion is real, and can take a toll on you. Maybe also talking to someone through Lyra might help? Good luck!
You should quit without regard to the busy season. Its your career and you owe it to yourself to make the right move as and when you want. I wont have any issues hiring back someone if the person was good and will be a good fit back in the team.
Big 4 partner here….
I would have agreed with the black balling a decade ago, but on a deep enough time horizon, no one is going to care. Plus there are another 3 firms to go to.

Only 4 firms people actually give a damn about.
Generally speaking, it’s a pretty bad look to leave during busy season. Especially at the beginning. If it was a bad look at your firm before Covid, I would assume it would be even worse look after Covid with everybody switching jobs and even less resources.
As someone in an advisory group that has a busy season: it’s nothing to worry about. I’ve honestly never even stopped to think about it when someone leaves during busy season.
Coach
Is there someone in your group you could ask?
Typically no but it depends on the firm and how they operate. If they staff teams more nationally then no. But if it’s more regional based and you try to reapply in the same region again and you pissed some Partners off when you left then yes.
I don't think it totally matters, people just leave - busy season or not. I think if you care about people on your team, it might annoy them on a personal level esp if you guys are close but otherwise don't worry
What advisory groups have busy seasons??
