McKinsey & Company McKinsey & Company been working here one year and received pretty positive feedback. Given the expectation for people of my tenure to transition to EM in a year or so, I can’t see myself staying due to the WLB as an EM. I’m 35 and have 2 young kids. Can it even be realistically done? Would love to stay but I don’t see a balance which would keep my family happy. What options do I have from there?
I heard Accenture pays more than McKinsey

Accenture?
Yeah, I figured. I assumed that the career ladder is pretty similar across the board for some reason 🤷♂️
Accenture lies about that stuff. Constantly.
That's why there are so many of us FORMER Accenture people around.
There are 2 Accentures:
Micro-Accenture is your team, your project, your counselor, your close network, and that's personally enriching and professionally rewarding.
Macro-Accenture is a giant black box steamroller that, at best, doesn't care about you, and, at worst, is actively looking for ways to screw you.
I was there for many years and made most of my closest friends there, but I couldn't put up with the BS anymore.
Former Accenture here too. I was in your position and the team I interviewed with told me the same thing. I stupidly believed them and after two years was still in that role. I had to go out and find my own opportunity on another team to be promoted. You know what happened? My job was threatened because how dare I advocate for myself when nobody else would. I agree with the other posters here. Definitely take the title bump...money or not it's more valuable.
Both, but more so for exit opportunities
You've been in professional services as an account director, but have you been in consulting before? Have you been a Senior Consultant (level 9, assuming Accenture) somewhere for 2 years? The difference between levels 8 and 7 is that as level 8, expectations are lower, you get more specific instructions, there is more oversight, and you may have a smaller field of responsibility. As a level 7, you're basically expected to know everything and to provide junior people with instruction and oversight on day 1, and your peers will likely be people who grew up in the firm or have a few years of consulting experience that may include managing others. If you're ready to manage a consulting project, might be good. But if you are at risk of dropping the ball because you don't "get" the expectations or rhythm of consulting, then level 8 would be a good place to learn.
The above info is not 100% targeted to the role you've been offered, as you may have a delivery role more so than consulting, but it is worth considering.
It is realistic, but not guaranteed in the near future. Do you know if they are hiring you because they need your skills for a particular project that is already in flight or signed to start soon?
If they have a particular project in mind for you already, they'll have you use your niche skills. Then, it will be up to you to learn other skills when you find time. But after that project, you may be able to find a project involving new skills to learn. Finding a project is often a tricky situation in consulting, so while there is some variability you can capitalize on, there is almost no predictability.
I assume you will be on long term projects because level 8 is a more common role in the delivery side of the house, so it could be a year or more before you get a new project.
Are you ready for M?
I am. But the potential difference in compensation (not taking bonus into account) is not huge.
I was basically told that the pressure between M and AM is incomparable, and that I might be better off in the long run if I take AM (fast track to M).
So, wondering whether I should even consider it, since it felt a bit bizarre at first to even consider a lower level role.
This is 100% for a position at Accenture lol. I say go to Manager. Job titles mean a lot at the firm. But, the thing is you will be expected to deliver as a manager. But, I mean you are currently a account director so I think you will do ok as a manager
Only Accenture uses those level numbers.
Campus hire analyst is a level 13. SM is a level 5.
You should go fit senior manager bcoz the titles don’t make any sense in consulting..get the highest title you can so that you are ready to jump the ship to next level..
