I’m in audit looking to be promoted to senior in July. Wondering if there’s any reason to stay at my firm for that promotion if my goal is to get away from auditing. Thinking I might end up in advisory or even pivot farther away from accounting in general. Does having that senior title on my resume matter?

Maybe depending on type of role you’re considering switch? Like if it is to become engineer then no lol

like

On your resume, no. But why leave the firm? Easier to switch to advisory within the firm or at another PA firm.

like

From personal experience, definitely easier to switch to another firm for advisory

like

So if I try to go to advisory at another firm, I should wait until senior, but if out of accounting position, doesn’t matter?

agree with PwC 2. OP many of my colleagues have left for advisory whether internal or at other PA firms at various levels. The most important thing to do is to network which is always much easier at the PA firms. Identifying what kind of advisory work you want to do also helps. Good luck!

I’m in the same timeline as you also looking to transition out of audit. Can anyone tell me when would be a good time to ask about a transition to advisory? i’m guessing after the senior promotion right?

*insert jokes about attention to details on job description*

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.

Been passed over for promotion twice (had support from multiple partners both times). Received the top performance rating every year since joining the firm (6 years), which I’ve heard is rare. When passed over, the partners say there were others who have been waiting longer (not necessarily with the highest ratings) and that I should “keep doing what I’m doing” and basically wait my turn. Anyone else face this and have any suggestions/guidance?

Advice needed! I started at an ID firm only a few months ago after a long stint doing in-house litigation. I was referred to the firm by a very good friend who also still works there. A management position at my old in-house firm has now been offered to me. Higher salary obviously and no billables. I am seriously dreading talking to my new boss and telling my friend that I want to go back in-house. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I just feel so bad and don’t want to burn bridges
