I'm in commercial contracting in house and everyone is driving me crazy today. Mainly business team being disorganized, Legal has to rush to help out or fast track contracts due to poor planning on business. Is this just commercial contracting? Or do other companies have a better handle on this.

Sales is sales; this happens everywhere.

In the exact same boat as you. If I get another “ASAP” in my email I’m going to throw something at the wall.

How about you bring us a quick sale?

It takes a lot of training of people in your org to avoid this. And even then it will still happen with some regularity. At least in my experience.

Familiar story. We have been trying to build service level agreements (eg you give us this info, we will get back to you within X hours, escalations to ASAP timing requires manager approval). Also looking at workflow collaboration tools. Haven’t solved any of it yet, but it’s getting better.

Not in my experience at my last two in house jobs. I set clear expectations from day 1. I understand some companies that doesn’t cut it. Best of luck… view it as gaining experience ?

To some degree this is a function of bad (or distracted) legal leadership historical, current, or both.

Happens the same, and I ask Business Lines to rate the "urgency" of the project from 1 to 10, being 10 a call or email from the CEO or CFO asking why the agreement is not done yet. If it's below 6 I tell them that I can wait a couple of days. Now I don't have to do that a lot, because they already now what I'm going to say, so they prefer to talk with me since the beginning.

The path I have found to mitigating this is by having a desk/seat/chair in the same area as the business. I don’t have a ‘formal’ desk there but I do all of my work in that area. It results in me getting pinged on a lot of minor issues (which is frankly good anyway) and I get looped into things way earlier in the project life cycle because they just see me around. That’s continued on through COVID because the relationship/system was set up pre-COVID but that’s the only thing I have found to mitigate this. When the teams I support are spread out, I just float more but I am rarely at my actual office. Even still, last minute things come up but it is significantly less frequent.

Template pdf contracts with fillable fields, including a section for them to put in whatever additional items they want. Then it comes to me. I take their rambling and replace it with some additional template verbiage I have. It’s a lot of upfront work, but eventually you stop duplicating effort and you end up with a “standard deal” that sales uses. You can get them trained that certain provisions are standard and non-negotiable (like indemnity, damage limitations and no prevailing party fees)

All day every day, but there'd be a lot fewer if us needed if the sales team actually did their prep work. :D

Not just commercial contracting. High importance emails are the norm and business frequently disregards issues until the last minute 😩. Praying for all of our sanity

Help me choose between these offers: €105k TC corp strat SM at a DAX company in Germany in a LCOL but nice city. €7.5k signing bonus + relocation. Culture is pretty good, pay should go up to €130k+ within a couple of years. $200k base M at B4 in Chicago. The culture is the culture. $25k signing bonus. Long-term, I'd rather live in Germany, but I have a personal network in Chicago from business school so either is fine in the short-term. Thanks for your input.

Have anyone done contracting negotiations before? I've interviewed for co A & B and co A extended an offer today. The offer does not meet my current salary. Co B's interview structure is 3 rounds and I've finished my 2nd round today. The recruiter mentioned that since I am a contractor my current salary is incomparable as they will provide benefits, etc. Is this true? I have 2 yrs of contracting HR exp from fortunate 500 co’s & OMW to get my SHRM-CP. Appreciate your advice in advance.
