I’m in consulting because in my undergrad business school culture it was either finance (non corporate) or consulting. Industry was seen as failure. I never gave it second thought. Anyone else?

I’m in consulting because I thought I would be able to find out what I want to do with my career. 2 years in and I’m more lost than I’ve ever felt. All I know is I HATE enterprise IT, and my entire background is in IT.

EDIT: And public accounting for the accounting majors

Agree. It was big 4, consulting, banking or bust

Maybe we went to the same school

We only had a few consulting firms interview on campus in undergrad, and it seemed the really smart kids got those jobs, but investment banking was considered cooler. But it wasn’t like people turned their noses up at folks who got jobs in industry. The smart jocks company of choice was P&G, for example. In business school there was clearly socialization that the cool kids did banking or consulting and that industry was for losers. Foolish in hindsight.

That’s what I’m saying. Man did I wish I knew better.

What school?

Yup

Public state university, top ~20, and felt like most folks went straight to industry. Public accounting being another huge chunk of folks. Finance and consulting is where probably less than 10% of folks went.

I didn’t know who the big 4 were or what consulting was. I just knew this was where my best friend was applying so I was too😂🤷‍♀️

Why do people want to work for UMM/MF? I feel likes it’s a rat race follow the heard mentality with little long term upside (you get paid a bunch for two years but then what?). I’m really keen to go the MM but feel like I’m making a mistake the way my friends talk about it…. In my mind a small younger growing fund is such a better opportunity — more learning, exposure, promotional potentially, and, hopefully, culture. What am I missing?

How interesting it is that the language ‘English’ restricted us to think what we can possibly think/experience/learn. I feel like because this language is so limited in words to understand our culture, it restricted several generations to learn beyond what we know today about our country and culture. I feel cheated 😭😞

This “always on” slack/teams culture needs to end. Timestamped emails after and before work hours should be penalised as signs of poor time management skills and project management efficiencies. I hope we do like germans and labor laws are made for after work hour messaging.

Imagine for a moment that all strategic consulting firms in the region would have consultants work no later than 9pm. Do you think the quality of the output would decrease? Or maybe the pricing the client is willing to pay would be lower? Or perhaps nothing would happen? I am thinking whether we work long hours because it’s by now part of work approach and culture or because we need to. (Personal experience: in London for my same firm I used to work much less and the output was great…)

Also, how is the culture of the other firms. Im not opposed to moving firms.
