I’m in dire need of a day off. I feel so guilty saying that bc I work minimal billable hours right now. Weekends are for catching up on personal life (finding groceries/ordering grocery delivery, meal prep, laundry, cleaning, etc) and workdays are consumed with screens. I just want a day to do things that bring joy. Bitch move to use “lady probs” to ask for a day off?

I was going to say fake a migraine, but if complete honesty is an issue that wouldn't work. 😜

Don't use that as an excuse. Just be honest and ask for a personal day. Or get your work done ahead of time and stealth take one without asking or telling anyone (and keep your phone handy to be responsive if something comes up)

After posting I realized I can’t lie to my boss, I love her lol so I woke up early and hope I can shut my brain down after lunch.

Just take a day off... it’s a pandemic

I would just say I need to take X off to run errands.

like

If someone needs a day off to run errands, I wouldn’t question them. Not only because it’s none of my business and I think they’re entitled to time off from work (and to use that time as they see fit), but also because grocery shopping can be a multi-hour ordeal where I live.

I’m going to say just take a day off. One thing I’m learning is that a company will always do what’s best for them, so you should follow that model and do what is best for you! I’ve found that I’m even more productive after a personal day. Practicing is heavy and sometimes you need a day full of mind numbing activities. Seize your day off, don’t feel bad about it, and return to kicking ass when you get back!

Take that personal day. Self care is the most important thing during this time.

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Any suggestions?

In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

So I have completely lost interest in my area of practice mainly because I haven’t been exposed to many matters (our team is really slow) and I am the most junior in the team. So billable work is never constant. I feel like this has impacted my interest and stagnated my growth. I am thinking of moving into a different area of practice that I’m interested in. Has anyone ever done this? I’m actually depressed and I really hate being given work now. I have ADHD. Please advise

What's up everyone? I saw a salary survey posted earlier. What do y'all think I should make at a litigation boutique that handles primarily business litigation on a contingency fee? No billable hours.

A reminder to those who are stressed about your billable hours that your value is more than your pure productivity. To those stressed about relationships, relationships are hard even for non-lawyers, but you are absolutely worthy of love. It is an important reminder for all of us that you are worthy and you are valuable. Keep fighting!

I was fired last month after a short time at the company. I knew things weren't going well- it was a terrible culture fit & I was also planning my exit strategy. They wouldn't give me specific reasons other than to vaguely say it was performance related. I agree I made a few dumb mistakes (none of any dire consequence) but what kills me is that I tried really hard. I don't want to change careers but I have a deep seeded fear that no matter how hard I try, I will never be a "good attorney".

Fellow millennial lawyers: tell me, in general terms, 1 or 2 clients you acquired and how you acquired them. I feel like the suggested strategies for developing business are always the same: network, build your brand (hate this phrase), market yourself on LinkedIn, etc. Does any of this work? Seems to me to that most business development comes from long-standing contacts (e.g. your childhood best friend is now CEO and needs legal services), so I’m curious how other attorneys developed business.
