I’m in final rounds for an in house position, but it’s mostly contract work. I’m coming from a lit background, so some contract work, but not drafting and red lining. What are the most practical guides/resources to brush up with.

Hi all, wanted to get opinions/advice. If rejected for position, would you then reach out directly to hiring manager to ask for reconsideration or similar over email? If so what would you ask?

Ps. When I followed up on candidacy they were still making decision for weeks. I let them know I had another opportunity hoping it would hurry them up and ended up not taking the other opportunity. Could it be they rejected me bc of the other offer? The hiring manager seemed to think I’d be a great fit.

Been in house for about a year. I just found out that a new hire who has 1-2 less years of experience than me (but will have the same role/title as me) received a compensation package significantly higher than me, mostly due to the market dynamics with law firm associates’ compensation being ratcheted up the past year. Can I ask for an equitable raise mid year? And if so, how? I got rave reviews but an immaterial pay bump (3%) at year end in December.

I am a litigation lawyer in a pretty niche practice, but I may have an interesting opportunity to go in-house for a large international company, which is something I have never really considered. As a young shareholder, I am on the upward trajectory at my firm and in my career in general. For those that have made the jump, what are you thoughts? And, while money isn’t everything it is something that must be considered: How do in-house salary & benefits compare?

Those who have returned to a law firm from being in-house - what was your experience like? If you hated a firm the first time, was it better the second time around? I swore I’d never go back, but seeing the newest round of BigLaw raises and salary increases I am genuinely considering it - I’m getting married and planning for kids shortly, and would like to buy a home in our HCOL city, and while I’m not starving on my in-house salary and am fairly frugal, I don’t feel like we have much cushion.

Does anyone in-house care about cover letters? I had an interview last week where the interviewer (a tech person and nonlawyer) said they found it odd that I submitted a cover letter. Aren’t they basically required? Or is this just a law firm thing?

After trying to find an in-house job since July, I finally have an offer at a company that I really like. Total comp is around $20-25k off from where I want to be. Equity comp may be the only way to bridge the gap but they said they don’t normally include equity comp at the corporate counsel level, which is odd. I have found that most companies do. Has anyone received equity comp in negotiations where it wasn’t originally on the table?
