I’m in-house for a RE developer, 18 ppl total w/ 3 attorneys (owner, GC, and me). I’ll be GC once he retires (probably within the next 2 yrs). 2015 grad. $200k annually (including bonus) plus I have a 2% partnership stake in all properties we buy (about 10 since 2017, but no distributions yet). SF Bay Area. Today I realized that there are a ton of remote jobs and we will soon go back to 100% in office (currently hybrid). I miss my kid a ton and love WFH days. Do I jump ship for 100% remote?

Why cant you ask re remote?

That’s a good question and it’s something I will be requesting if our hybrid schedule goes back to in-office full time. The owner is crazy about seeing people at the office even if it means that we are sitting there doing nothing. Total control freak.

I negotiated a hybrid work environment as part of my terms of hiring well before the pandemic. I find that most employers will adapt as long as they see you at least some point during the week and you commit to being in the office for any necessary in-person meetings. If you don’t ask, you won’t get it. Where initial GC positions are hard to come by, it seems like you are well-situated so, if you are happy otherwise, ask and let them know how important it is to you and explain it in a way where it adds value to the company such as, “I can spend more time addressing company matters and I am more refreshed to do so because I am not commuting for x hours per week and can put that back into the company.”

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

For those who already have a baby - I (36f) just had a baby 6 weeks ago, and my wife (33F) is now back at work (WFH) and I’m still on leave. Since I have the baby all day and get up with her all night, my wife basically “takes over” baby duty when she stops working. The problem is that within an HOUR she has lost all patience with the baby. She gets frustrated so quickly if the baby is crying and will say things like “I’m just going to let her cry since nothing im doing helps” (cont)

Ladies how do you manage your relationship when your spouse holds you to what you promised you would do before you got married but then you realize you can’t do it. I had promised my husband I would fast with him for an entire day on a specific religious holiday, but when I did for the first time I had stomach pains, headache, and nausea. I told him I can’t do it for that long again but he said “we’ll see, you just need to push through”.

Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.
