I’m in ID… trying to get to transactional real estate with no luck. Would taking a litigation role at a real estate firm help me get there?

I got myself out of ID and into real estate litigation, but I don't have any aspirations of doing transactional work. I hope the following is helpful if you pursue real estate lit:

Getting into real estate lit required demonstrating a real mastery of the litigation skill set, and I was rejected by more than ten (maybe even 15) firms in my region before landing a job with one of the better firms.

To demonstrate that mastery, I sent every prospective employer multiple high level writing samples (all of which were drafts untouched by a partner), my best deposition transcripts, and my most complex mediation statements.

During interviews, I was extremely candid about wanting out of ID, and fine-tuned that approach over the course of the first 3 or 4 interviews. I'm sure that this turned off some hiring partners, but my gut told me that trying to conceal it was the wrong move. Ultimately my candor found receptive and sympathetic ears with the partner who hired me.

I also had to accept a salary of an associate 2 years my junior, with a promise to review it after 6 months, but that's the cost of getting out of ID. It's still far more than I was making in ID.

@AA2, I'm only halfway through the 6 months, so time will tell.

@OP, just be prepared to provide proof of the skillset. Maybe even volunteer it. That's what I did. The salary discussions are difficult, because my impulse was to negotiate, but I was extremely hesitant to talk myself out of a job or seem entitled when I was trying to break into a new practice area. Understanding that you're going to cost the firm money for some time is important.

Initial thought and not being in that practice, I’d do something to demonstrate interest and knowledge in the area you want to get into. If you can do it another way, fine but RE litigation seems to have transferable skills to where you want to go.

like

I have been told by partners that litigation shows you what to prevent in contracts. So it’s transferable.

This was my thought

Side note: everybody loves to shit on ID here, but very few seem interested in helping ID folks move forward with their careers. Exhibit A: lack of response to OP's post. Makes you wonder...

Hello, HR Professionals or Recruiters. I’m struggling on which certifications to get. Just pivoted into a Talent Sourcer role, I have experience of talent attraction but I wonder which HR/recruitment qualifications I could do to support my transition.

Deciding between:
1. CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice (will allow me to gain a high level view of the HR function that my new role fits into)
2. Level 3 Certificate in Recruitment Practice

What do you miss most about the office?

My firm recently moved me to a new practice area. The partner who I have worked with for quite some time does not have enough work, and she does not want to be in a supervisory, teaching role. The firm moved me without having a real conversation, and the practice areas are like night and day. On one hand, I am extremely grateful to have a job. However, I am afraid that this jump could stunt my career since the new area has few exit opportunities. Any thoughts on how to proceed? Leave my firm?

I applied & interviewed at a small firm in JUNE. I thought it went well & the owner & I knew each other from previous cases we handled. They ghosted me so I moved on. Mid November comes & I get a call from the paralegal “are you still looking for a job?” I thought that ship sailed but let’s see what they offer. It’s the holidays & I’ve got time off already scheduled. They’ve made a tempting offer but are not flexible on the time off & seem desperate. Like they want someone to put out fires.
