I’m in insurance defense in New York. I just received a job offer for $100K and a billing requirement of 2,200 annually. Thoughts or opinions?

Nope. Nope nope. Nope nope nope. Nope.

like

No that sounds like hell. Although if you’re switching to employment you could take the job for a year and then have the experience to move to a larger L&E firm like Littler and make a lot more money for probably less hours

like

Nope

like

Agree. That’s $45 an hour. You’re better of taking a govt job and actually having a life for $45 an hour.

likehelpful

Even if this move is leaving ID, it sounds like jumping out of the fire and into a moderately less hot fire. Hold off until you get an offer with a much better billable-salary ratio

like

I would rather drive for uber

funnylike

Is this a joke post? I'm asking seriously because I've been a recruiter for 15+ years and have never seen a 2,200-hour requirement.

like

Hm, okay, thank you guys! I appreciate all of the help.

In my opinion that’s way too low of pay for way too many hours. For reference, when I was a first year I turned down an offer for $95k plus bonus with a 1850 requirement in New Jersey. I know first years making $130k.

like

Absolutely not.

like

No. As other people here said, too low for the billables, esp in NY. Doesn't matter if it's ID and you're a third year. The market is so hot right now that you could, in theory, go to a non-ID firm as a first year and make more money and have less billables. You're juioor enough that that taking a small seniority cut to join a better firm is a realistic option. I started after law school at an actual insurance co in NYC as an in house lawyer in 2014 making 118K and didn't have billables, so...take that for what it's worth.

like

Do the math on how much you’re getting paid per hour, and it’ll be obvious. 2200 is pure billing. Add 1-1.5 hrs per day (conservatively) for non billable and you’re well over 2500 per year.

like

Another no vote. Even if they paid you double, 2200 hours = no WLB.

like

@OP—That offer is insane. I would never—even just out of law school have taken that.

like

I’m shocked at your thoughts only because they initially offered me $85K and I refused. This was their counter. 😂

funny

It’s still in insurance defense, but my caseload would consist of mostly Labor Law cases. At my current firm, I’m doing slip and fall accidents.

like

The only good advice to you is to (a) not take this job, and (b) get out of ID.

like

I don’t know whether that makes a difference, which is why I’m putting it out here. I feel like I have no idea what my market value is, what I should expect, and what to ask for.

I had another interview today that I’m very hopeful about. It’s also insurance defense, but their requirement is 1950 hours annually. They haven’t given me an exact number yet, but they said it ranged from $95K to $105K.

I forgot to mention this, but I’m almost a third year associate. I graduated in May 2019, but got admitted in October 2020.

like

Thank you all so much for all of your help!

like

Yeah that's outrageous

like

Last year, I was offered $90k for 2000 hours doing L&E at an ID firm as a first year and I'm in Texas (very low COL). So your offer doesn't seem like a good deal especially with how expensive NY is.

Plaintiffs counsel took my clients deposition today. He mentioned that he would likely be ordering the transcripts and I suggested we split the cost of them (in front of court reporter). He got pretty defensive and said absolutely not, it’s unfair to the court reporter, and that it is frowned upon in the industry to do that. Each party orders (and pays for) their own copy. I’m in my 2nd year of practice, never heard such a thing. I’ve actually split the cost before! Curious for insight on this…
