I'm in my first year of college and have decided to study business and finance. I'm not really sure what I want to do with it yet but I just know I want to be successful. Any advice for a young woman pursuing a male dominated industry? Things you wish you knew or things you would have done differently?

It’s actually not that male dominated in many segments anymore, specifically private banking and financial planning. My team is 70% women and my last firm was 60% women and most places now hire at least 50% women so as a young person you’re unlikely to see gender disparity in the entry level ranks anywhere. Overall it is still more men than women but that’s skewed by the 50+ age cohort.

In some investment roles and areas like private equity it is still more male dominated across the board, but it can actually beneficial to be a woman going into those areas. Many big firms really want gender equity so women get an advantage in groups that struggle to retain female talent. For example many women investors move to the banking side because the job/hours are so much more flexible. So young women investors are highly prized and get bigger clients sooner and more mentoring from what I’ve observed.

But you don’t need to worry about any of that yet! Enjoy school and take a variety of classes and follow what sparks interest.

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

Do you think Fishbowl posts are truly anonymous? It seems likely to me that Fishbowl/GlassDoor is selling companies data with the privacy stripped away so they can see what their employees are posting. Do you think they sell the data but it’s still anonymous?

However, I feel really bad because of the timing (there would never be a good time for me to be replaced) and what I would be doing to the owner (pushing back their personal and company goals). Do any other "feelers" out there have any advice on how to approach this?
