I’m in New York. Texas has triple the daily death rate as New York. Is Texas being too reckless, or is New York being too strict?

Both. Texas is ahead of the ball but the vaccine is a game changer. Once it’s available to all adults in the US, then those who have any statistically significant risk (eg not kids) have the ability to protect themselves. At that point, people should be free to make their own decisions regarding masks and interaction as we move from pandemic to endemic disease. It’s so odd that the same people so desperate to get the vaccine seem to be the most likely to also want to act like it does nothing (despite the science)....I guess that’s what a year spent doom-scrolling does to the mind.

I can’t compare TX and NY, but I lived in CA and TX during this past covid season. What I’ve seen in Tx (San Antonio/Austin) is that people seem more covid compliant than in CA (Los angeles). As an example, I know for a fact that there are (even this week) multiple, weekly underground parties in LA with upwards of 300-400 people (full mingling, normal club style). Texas clubs are open but the ones I’ve seen actually do a good job separating table groups with partitions and barriers, even a security guy walking around keeping people in their section.

If you walk around the streets in LA, most people don’t wear their masks, or they take it off immediately when they exit a store and get outdoors (I don’t have an opinion on this, just pointing out differences). Here in TX I see most people wearing their masks all the way til they get into their car or homes.

When we went to the gym in LA, easily 50% of people weren’t wearing masks and nobody cared (when they were allowed to be open). Here in TX, there’s solid 99% mask compliant rate at the gym, and the front desk actively shuts down non-maskers.

I don’t have a specific point to make, just pointing out what I’ve witnessed. Texans aren’t all crazy antimaskers, I don’t understand gov Abbott but I cross my fingers the average Texan population will retain common sense about mask use.

Yes. Texas is being stupid. Abbott is out to prove something. Question is - do Texans just open up. I doubt they will

like

....because Texas has been under mask mandate....which is what abbot lifted.............................

OP, are you saying you think New York is saving too many lives?

like

Special shout-out to Team One and A Business Tax Advisor for contributing to the conversation.

Where are you getting this info on death rate? NY has a 7-day average of 112 deaths daily and Texas has a 7-day average of 232 deaths daily. Texas population is 50% larger than NY. TX also began counting “probable” COVID deaths in December and NY doesn’t, so the data may be skewed.

like

EY please stick to the numbers instead of attacking me directly. Yes of course it’s selected data — I selected the “New Deaths” column. There is no “Daily Deaths Per 1M” column, which I do not feel like busting out the graphing calculator to figure out.

We could also look at TOTAL “Deaths Per 1M” and New York is #2 and Texas is #24. BUT it’s spread out over a whole year. Remember, NY got hit HARD in April 2020, then the deaths mostly rolled off. Other states got hit later.

Texas has just under 30 million residents, New York about 20 million. Texas has triple the daily deaths to New York. But, Texans are spaced out further, and have a car culture.

Considering in all the variables — you are right, there are many — you have to select SOMETHING. I think at most it’s a wash, but Texas technically has more right now even when they are spaced out further. The only non-debatable number is the daily new deaths.

The whole point of this post is, if Texas and New York are doing about the same, or if Texas is doing worse, why is New York closed and why is Texas open.

Some people say Texas is being foolish. Others are saying the vaccine is a game changer and Texas is doing the right thing, and other states like New York are not adjusting their strategies to adapt to the vaccines.

As a Texan, I'd say pretty bluntly that our state government doesn't care about COVID-19 safety. I'll point to our reopenings last May and the electricity crisis two weeks ago as examples.

Last May, we ran all the way from stay-at-home orders to fully reopened in about four weeks. A month and a half after the final reopening (which was the biggest jump), our daily case counts were 3-5x as high and our daily death counts 8-10x as high. During the reopening, Governor Abbott's main argument as to why the timing was OK was that we had plenty of additional hospital capacity. He said barely anything about actually preventing the spread of the virus, but plenty about hospital beds.

Two weeks ago, the vast majority of us struggled with rolling or "rolling" blackouts because our power plants and natural gas providers couldn't function in a hard freeze. The federal government had warned Texas about winterization issues after our winter storm in February 2011, but the state government at the time decided regulation wasn't the answer. Instead, they said that private companies would do the right thing and focused on fighting federal regulations on greenhouse gas production from power plants. One of the lead fighters in those disputes was our Attorney General at the time, Greg Abbott.

Barely two weeks later, Abbott is saying the exact same thing: that private companies and private citizens will do the right thing when it comes to enforcing COVID-19 policies such as mask requirements. And if you think that cities have any power to enforce those mask ordinances, I would remind you that this administration has repeatedly targeted cities and counties to shut down local rules and ordinances that aren't satisfactorily Republican, everything from fracking ordinances to - yes - mask and lockdown rules.

Yeah, I'm a little bit fed up with things.

Totally get it and respect your choice. But others have the right to rationally feel differently and assess risk differently so long as all those at statistical risk have (via vaccines) the power to protect themselves. At that point the pandemic is over anyway. Put another way, of you aren’t a threat to others, others have no right to complain about your actions. The restrictions existed because people had no defense against the virus. With the vaccine they do. That changes the moral, economic, and societal calculus. It flips it on its head. I have been sending my kid to daycare this entire time. My husband has been working in the hospital the entire time. We had Covid. And we are vaccinated. I don’t believe Covid is a threat to my child at all. We have followed the rules to protect others but all bets are off when others can protect themselves. If they choose not to, that’s on them. Society shouldn’t kowtow to idiocy.

Lolol Op can you double check those numbers?

like

Here you go. Column in red is new deaths in the past day. When I posted, NY was +90, Texas was about +270. The numbers changed for the worse in NY, but as you can see, Texas has more, even when factoring in population. (Texas has 29M people, NY has 19M). I don’t know what to make of the data. What do you make of California and Florida? California has been closed and Florida has been open and the covid death rates are similar despite Florida having a much older population base.

like

Ah, VP 2, I’m back. Have you drank the blue kool-aid? You apparently choose to believe the numbers. I don’t trust anything the left says - to wit, see Gov Cuomo. I instead choose life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I think of it like parenting styles. If you're too strict with kids, more than likely they'll rebel and sneak around you anyways (in this case, people will still gather and go out, etc., which I've seen quite a bit in CA which has been strict). If you're loose, you give your kids freedom to learn from their mistakes. With either parenting style, kids are still going to do what they want to do, just the ones with strict parents will go behind their backs 🤷🏻‍♂️

A2, fine you can make an argument that the real problem of 2020 was the action we took to mitigate the spread of COVID. There very likely are some people who were negatively impacted by COVID mitigation and died an early death due to suicide or depression but you need to do the work to quantify that impact vs the direct deaths from COVID. It takes time and effort, and the people like Texas' governor who want things to "go back to normal" today aren't doing it.

That also isn't the argument ASM made. They said that there were no excess deaths in 2020 and the only people who died, would have died soon anyway. That is false.

I’m in Texas and most of the people who don’t want to wear masks have either caught COVID already or cut the line with some falsified underlying illness to get vaccinated. For reference, I’m in 30s and just about everyone in my social circle here has either been vaccinated or has an appointment to get vaccinated in the next week or so. I have friends from out of state who fly in and volunteer for a day to get their shots. Not all anti-maskers are stupid, they’re just incredibly selfish.

Hello hello.

I am getting promoted soon. I work out of the NYC office of a top ten (non B4) firm. I would love some insight on what others in a similar situation were paid as a first year manager or expect to be paid.

I am currently sitting at 92.5k as a senior. Covid killed my most recent raise (for the whole firm). I am consistently getting high ratings.

Thanks in advance!
