How much exposure to strategy and planning do you have? It’s a major part of the role, and perhaps more so in a smaller shop, do you have dedicated strategists? I find a lot of my day is keeping clients and the work on strategy, fighting for the work using strategic rationale. Working on comms in order to sell through.
And yes, would definitely reference where you’ve worked with strategists and apply the knowledge of working with TV networks to bring them into the Creative idea and direct them to be on strategy.
Another critical skill I think is mitigating tough situations. Draw from your EP experience to share how you’ve managed a tense situation, keeping clients and internal teems happy etc
I actually started my career in production and switched to account. What I found was, I had to take a lower level account job to get my foot in the door, but once they saw how good I was, they promoted me in three months. You might try something similar - maybe try landing a Supervisor or Management Sup role, then pushing for promo quickly after if all is going well.
Another route you could take is changing your title on your resume to Executive Producer/Account Director, since you’re doing the work anyway. That may make it easier to at least land an interview.
One concern I would have, as mentioned in a comment above, are the gaps in experience/skills that may be required, specifically digital or print production management and strategy, as mentioned above. Very few account jobs in DC are going to be primarily video, they’ll probably want someone with an integrated background, so if there’s anything you can do to play up that (or learn it), try to.
As for strategy, I’ve found there are 2-3 books that every strategist reads who then acts like an expert 😂 Read a couple of these and you’ll be set to talk the talk: How Brands Grow, How Not to Plan, and Good Strategy/Bad Strategy. Once you get a job, look on the server for old briefs to replicate the formatting, plug in the clients background and objectives, and you’ll be good to go. Most agencies will have strategists on hand to lead the big planning discussions, so you just need to know the foundations, and the books will teach you that.
Wow! This is all solid advice. Thank you! Also great to hear from your experience it can be done. So how do you like being in Accounts vs Production? Still happy you made the change?
Sure sounds like you’re already doing most of the work, which is good news, so it could be an easy transition. Every agency’s account director roles are different, so be sure to dig into expectations.
Thanks! What are some of the expectations to look out for or ask for?
All the advice here is great! Also important to note, the hirer you go in account management the farther way from the work you get, especially at a big shop. The budgeting, scoping, scheduling etc will be the role of mangers and sups, and your role as a director will be more inline with thought leadership and thinking strategically about the account and brand. Smaller shops will have you doing more so that might be a good place to start.
Something I wish I knew when I started in accounts!
