OP, if 200% is what you want/need, then 200% it is. If they cant give it, at least you will know their limit. Don’t settle for less because it will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth and you dont want to go into a job unhappy.
Ask for what you want. If they want you, they'll negotiate. Whatever they are paying you, you can be sure they are making that much more off off you.
I make ~140k + 20% and when asked by the recruiting team what my current salary range was I told them $170 going to ~$190 later this year with + 25% bonus. My target was for them to give me $170 + 25% + equity... and that’s what they have now given me for a minimum expected comp raise of ~40% and a max of ~60%. Start by telling them what you currently make and ensure that number you give is where you want to be. Then you don’t come off as an asshole asking for too much and instead you are just asking them to “match” current comp so as to not take money away from your family. Also check Glassdoor to see if that number is reasonable for that company and role.
“Ask for what you want” has to be accompanied by a clear understanding of market range. Otherwise as you stated OP, you may come off as an (out of touch/delusional) ass.
Apply the same concept to any other position. For example if a new undergrad is being recruited for a big 4 firm and asks for 130k that would delusional, considering that the market typically only pays 70-85 for a new hire with no work experience. If they followed the advice to “ask what you want” they’d be laugh out of recruitment. Know the market range and know what your experience and skills qualifies you for
Appreciate the perspective M1. While generally true, I cannot come in and ask for "200%" more... thinking about a reasonable ranger may help. Maybe 50-70% ... I dunno
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately Glassdoor doesn't have info for this opportunity, so need to get creative to estimate a range I can use for the negotiations table...
