I work in audit and I have an MBA Degree, but I feel like audit isn’t the place for me. Do you advise me to start applying for consulting jobs or just wait until I become a senior after 1 year and a half. Compared to most degrees, it is of course fantastic. I’m certain you would have an amazing time. But compared to the highly competitive (typically measured by career opportunities) field of MBAs it is not quite top tier. LBS and INSEAD are the European MBAs that compete best against the US schools. In terms of actual scholarship I would say Oxford MBA is a great MBA. It’s just that MBAs are less of a thing in Europe and Oxford University totally overshadows the business school. If you wanted an Oxford degree that held more weight in the UK I would go with a straight masters in economics or finance or something. That implies more scholarship than the MBA. Source: I went to Oxford for undergrad and INSEAD for MBA.
I did a similar course (MFE), but we were bucketed with the MBAs a lot. I would say the Oxford experience is definitely worth it, it's an amazing historic town with a great student life. Top events, speakers, you have presidents, CEOs etc visiting (I once went to a lecture by John Nash if you're into these kind of topics). Career wise, not sure, depends where you want to work after and what your names on the CV were before. If you're planning on a career in London, it certainly opens doors.
No real opportunity to intern, it’s perceived as a back door to Oxford so company recruiters will often say “we’re not interviewing MBAs” at presentations... it’s a great experience and there are smart people there, but it’s definitely not “top” even compared to US State School MBAs. If you do want to go Oxford the MFE or other degree might be more useful. So it can be great but it’s worth considering your options.
Thank you very much for your answers! Much appreciated
Thanks, VP! I have a (stem field) masters already though, so I’d assume MBA would make more sense 🙃
