I’m interested in possibly in using the Predictive Index test for hiring purposes. Does anyone use it? Any information would be useful in determining if this is a good hiring strategy.

I have NEVER used it for the purpose of hiring. however when I was applying for a new role, the recruiter really liked me and wanted me to move forward in the process. She made me take the test 4 times because it said I was too adaptable. I always thought that was a strength especially in recruiting. Just thought I’d tell you about my personal experience.

helpful

Thank you! I do believe being adaptable is a positive attribute. Odd

We use this extensively at my company. It is part of our culture. It is really good if you know how to use it. It's a slippery slope and sometimes managers will start "PI Fishing", but when it is used right, it can really help you with making sure you have the right person in the right place. I'd be happy to discuss my experiences with it. I've been working with it for over 10 years.

If you are willing to invest the time to set up the PI profiles for the jobs you are recruiting for and can attend training on reading them it’s worth it. There are clear markers that PI brings out IMO.

likehelpful

I have used at previous jobs and became certified analyst to help w recruiting and use as developmental tool w hiring managers. I loved it.

likehelpful

I used PI for several years and really liked it. I spent 2 days becoming certified to administer and comprehend the results. There is a lot of information that can be gathered but I thought it was great information to have.

like

To participate in training, the company has to be a client and costs are usually part of their training budget.

I like PI, but I wouldn’t use it for the purpose of hiring, because people can adapt, their behavior can change under circumstances, and because there are behaviors attributed to gender roles and different diversity groups, like “too adaptive” is def a female attribute. And this type of profiling can reinforce the bias and discrimination.

like

There is almost 60 years of ongoing science and validity studies behind PI that shows it objectively measures what is supposed to measure - peoples drives and associated needs and behaviors. The results and insights from PI will never say that someone is "too" anything. With self awareness about our drives, and the needs of any role, the question that can be answered is "Am I naturally more suited for this role and/or how much will I need to flex to do it?" People absolutely can adapt and PI addresses that.

like

I have used it in a few different roles I have had and loved it. It has been the most accurate tool I have used. It is behavior based, which means it is NOT a personality test, and it has been verified for the use of hiring. It is an EXTREMELY beneficial tool for succession planning as well.

likesmart

I can tell you all about PI as a former client and now certified master trainer. As others have said, it is never used as a final decision maker in hiring or promoting someone. It is a scientifically valid, objective tool that gives you insights into people's drives and predictable behaviors associated with those drives. Of course, the other "data" points to consider when making hiring or promotion decision include someone's experience, values, and culture fit which you try to assess during the interview process. There are no "bad" profiles and the core value of the insights is about self-awareness and understanding others so you can work best with them. Reach out to me if you want to learn more.

Some of our businesses used this for sales roles.

smart

Yes, I use it daily. Works great for Sales positions and for accounting/finance. Helps determine the role their behavior plays into that position. Example: do they have a high drive, are they flexible or precise? Also can help determine where you might physically place that person in the office. :)

helpful

I wanted to introduce this to a client but she said we can’t use them, or personality/character trait tests, as part of the interview process as it may cause liability issues. I am so confused by that — any insight? (I’m in CA)

It could be considered as profiling which could be discriminatory. Now PI say that won all lawsuits like that

helpful

I am in Staffing and have many clients who use this for sales roles and assessments. I am in Texas but we have relationships across the states and have seen the predictive index mostly for Sales. Also roles that have sales aptitude requirements and need some assessment. Have not seen anyone not hire as it’s not a pass or fail but used to index.

Yes, we use it - it’s quite helpful for sales and our consultant positions

You should check your state laws. I work in a state where any personality testing and testing that is done before offer is made is considered discriminatory. Earlier in my career I worked at a company where they used PI even we were warned not to. There was a complaint filed and the state’s center against discrimination knocked on the door. It was costly in legal fees. And the company finally stopped using it.

I’m based in MA

Probably a stupid question so I apologize for asking it in advance. I was having a discussion with a buddy about A&M and AlixPartners and this friend who works at AlixPartners sounded a bit arrogant about the fact that he chose AlixPartners over A&M. How does fish fam view those two companies? I feel they both are equally prestigious, have equally good exit opportunities, regularly poach each other’s employees and pay equally well. Thoughts ?

Back again with a question for the McKinsey folks! 1. Is it true that if you are internal (specifically PD) you are not eligible for a performance bonus? Just base and the 401K profit sharing? 2. I know McKinsey offers a percentage of your salary into a retirement fund. The recruiter painted it as a range (from 7-12%), but other fish in the main consulting bowl said it’s either 7 OR 12% (no in between) based off of if you’re client facing or internal - which is true?
