Sign up for any survey panels you can. Take all of the surveys and observe the types of questions asked and the way they’re asked. That’s the biggest form of research done for researchers. You may also want to practice programming your own surveys in surveymonkey or pollfish so that you can program them in a research job if necessary. It’s a useful skill to have and easy to learn.

Second, it helps to know statistics because you’ll use that for the analyses. So maybe brush up on simple stats or learn SPSS.

Lastly, learn as much as you can about secondary sources. It sucks to try and reinvent the wheel every time your client has a question. There’s tons of research out there from academic research journals to mintel or MRI or ANA or WARC or wherever. Learn how to find it and learn to identify reputable sources.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Research? It isn’t 1971

That’s how I started my career in research. I would recommend you to get familiar with the syndicated tools of media measurement used in you agency, that will give you a good understanding of the type of work and information you need to manage.

If your agency also offers proprietary research tools, it is important that you get familiar with and what are they used for. Agree with what was mentioned above of reviewing your stats knowledge and key softwares like SPSS.

Good luck!

What is everyone's experience with vacation/sick leave? I work at a Plaintiff/general practice firm (Less than 10 attorneys/staff). Office manager/HR tracks vacation and sick leave (they are separate, cant use sick leave for vacation and vice versa) It is tracked as hourly vacation (though we are all salary) I took 4 days (32 hours) of vacation and I worked the whole time. I had to battle for her to give me some hours added back to my vacation. Seems wrong to me. Any thoughts?

Are interviews still insanely hard for anyone else, any other candidates? Before COVID, I found getting a corporate/startup/tech job to be an incredibly difficult, grueling experience, and I’m finding the same thing now despite all the job vacancies and people quitting like flies. I’m finding employers are doubling down on the same power tripping nonsense they did in interviews with me now despite me having several successful, quantifiable years of experience in Tech. It’s funny because I found

Do you think it's better to let your work speak for you in terms of getting promoted/moving up? My college mentor (admittedly not for analytics) was always adamant that promotions would come when you deserved them, but I've seen several people I wouldn't necessarily consider rock stars at their job getting promoted this year. Should I be going after it harder/asking for it instead?
