I’m interviewing a candidate for an open role. The candidate included their political views on their resume. Would you view this as a red flag?

Q-anon crazy views or just conservative vs liberal? If latter I’d give them the benefit of the doubt if everything else works out. But will definitely be more careful in the interview to make sure they are not a lose cannon on the political aspects.

OP mentioned on another comment that they already have a team member with strong political views who has been known to occasionally spout them. As a openly conservative individual, who is a conservative - not a far right member of society (actually a libertarian but we live in a 2 party world unfortunately) you should witness some of the BS that I have to listen to when I am being ‘educated’ in the office by certain individuals 🤮 So I completely agree about confirming the individual is not a loose cannon as it can be uncomfortable for those around them.

As someone who has jobs at both a big 4 firm and the local political scene, I see nothing wrong with it. If it is the title of their volunteer experience then it sounds like they simply put it on their resume as such. Not to mention it is unethical not to hire someone based off of your perceived notion of what their views may or may not be.

Lol yes

Volunteer experience, no. It shows an interest in local/regional issues. Just randomly on the application somewhere. Then yes. It's a red flag.

I am the assistant treasurer at my church. It's on my resume. For the same reasons.

Immediate hire. Clients will love to hear their political affiliations

How did they include their views on a resume? Like “Trump won!!” or was there a picture of the Democrat Donkey?

like

SA1 also the half of America with less education

like

Are they part of a political club ? Like I remember someone had a leadership position at the democratic/republican campus club and put that on their resume. I wouldn’t mind if it was like that but if they put Feel the burn or MAGA on their resume then there will be issues

I think Deloitte 1 is right. Don't over-react when it's just a college kid trying to fill their resume with whatever experience they have.

Or a blue flag??

I was thinking of the same thing. It depends on which side the candidate supports. 🤣

Mentioning lengthy past volunteer experiences is completely normal imo. The way you presented it in the opening post was super misleading. It's not political views out of nowhere, it's relevant experience.

like

agree - my response was based on orig post and I didn't read through to what was really on the resume

Yeah that seems weird, but I guess it depends on how old the candidate is. I would probably ignore it if it's a kid who may not know what you would put on a resume.

I would just pass on them. don't need any more of it

Most of the folks on my team aren’t very opinionated, or at least don’t talk politics at work. I do have one team member with strong political opinions, and occasionally brings them up. It’s a little annoying but not a big deal. Some concern does come to mind though, as the candidate listed opposite views on their resume with the volunteer position. I could envision these two arguing, which could hurt productivity. Ultimately I just want the team to be efficient and get along. Perhaps I could instruct both individuals not to talk politics at work, if the candidate seems promising

who in the heck would do that! old or young. would make me think he/she is either a right/left wing nut case or too idiotic to know you don't do that which doesn't say much about their common sense

funny

Maybe are just trying to avoid working for people that would have a problem with their affiliation.

like

Oh no, please say it ain’t so, whatever will I do 🤣

Would you include a political club if you were president? I would never join one so never thought about it

YES!!!

Same with any religious affiliation, fan club you are a member, video game preference, movie/music genre, favorite sports team. Seriously people we are not filling out yearbook/facebook surveys. Nobody needs to know this information until a happy hour, if you get the job, probably not even then if you sit next to me - I'm just there for the free food and drinks and I do not care about any of the above. Surface jokes about our clients or home life stories if it is light and funny, and nothing serious or political - ever.

Absolutely. That means they are way to much of a hardo to not bring it up in a casual conversation. It’s a taboo topic for a reason
