If you get a lateral offer from a firm I would not expect to get another one from the same firm in a year or two if you turn them down now. No one will be pissed off (the interview process is a two way street) but people will remember you turned them down and be unlikely to go through the process again in the near future.
I think that’s fine, especially in light of the uncertainty with the pandemic and current circumstances. If you end up not taking the offer, I would just characterize it as that and say you would like to stay in touch down the road once things settle down in case their group continues to require additional associate support.
I agree. I’ve done this and some have even reached out to me occasionally to see if I was ready to move. I guess this comes down to how much they want you and how well you know people there. But I can’t see it hurting you if they make you an offer but you are not ready to move. Changing jobs is a big decision.

What would be the reason you'd turn down an offer from them now but potentially accept one a few years from now?

I’m in good standing with my current firm and my medium-term prospects are good (and I’d have to build a reputation from scratch if I switched), but this could always change and the other firm could become a more attractive proposition in a short while
Why are you interviewing with them?

They got in touch with me and I figured talking to them wouldn’t hurt

Are you me? I legitimately just did this and turned it down to stay put.
