Unfortunately this has become the standard at the director level. They say “no more than 4 hours” on a presentation but when you’re interviewing with multiple places and they’re all like that it can be overwhelming. My advice is only do the project if you’re already aligned on comp and really want the position. I recently got an offer for a director of product marketing role but it was 9 interviews, 2 presentations, a case study and behavioral assessment. It felt like a lot but I also had a lot of negotiating power during the offer phase.
Best reply so far
Actually sounds exactly like our hiring process.
It is a lot, but I would only pursue it if you think it’s the right fit for you. Not all companies operate the same.
Thanks for the reply. They forgot to attach the case study prompt, so I’m waiting on that, but already thinking I may bow out, as I wasn’t extremely excited about the role.
4 hours is a tad on the high side but still within norms. When you pass, you may have to do another interview after that, with a skip-level.
I’m never confident about their estimates of how long the presentation should take. Assuming you care about the company, spend however much time on the presentation as you need to feel comfortable.
Pretty standard
Yup, most of my processes were exactly the same. I think it’s because PMMs work with various functions.
Because product marketing is a crucial function at some companies (e.g. some tech firms), it can require a rigorous interviewing process. My last role (PMM position) seemed like a junior role but warranted 6 back to back(!) interviews on the same day plus a presentation. It’s getting pretty competitive, especially given the skillset required to do well in the role.
Wow, glad you got the job after such an investment. I had 6 rounds for my current role, but no presentation. Last time I had to do a presentation was for a head of marketing position, so that made sense. I almost wish these were all back-to-back so I could at least just take a single day off.
Just had such a similar experience / ask from a healthcare startup that I’m wondering if it’s the same company. I agree that product marketing is so fundamental for these orgs that they want to be rigorous in the selection process. On the other hand, there is rarely one of these assignments that you can actually pull together in a few hours. To do great work, the case study I was given would’ve taken 50 hours minimum to pull together. I ended up bowing out for similar reasons - it never felt like the exact right fit and 50 hours is a lot of “free” consulting hours to give away to a company you’re not excited about. Good luck to you!
Yeah it’s the feeling of free consulting work that never sits well with me. I stayed in for the interview practice and bc I had that mindset, I only put a couple hours into the case study. In repurposed a lot from a previous exercise.
Depends how extensive your portfolio is in your role I guess and how easily you can portray that.
That’s standard. I interviewed for a sr manager role at LinkedIn/Glint - that presentation took over 80 hours. Prior to that, I did a presentation for LinkedIn that took 50.
Holy cow! I’d probably do it for LI, but this isn’t a top tech company.
That’s not unheard of. We have a similar process at my place and the presentation might need some love/attention if it’s part of the evaluation. I’ve seen our team turn down applicants due to the presentation.
If you really want the job, I’d suggest going the extra mile. If you don’t want the job, just pass on it and I’m sure they’ll understand.
Standard and honestly easier than what I’ve had. Most rounds was 13 and I had about 11 hours of total interview time to include two presentations
Holyyyy cow. It’s tough out there!
On one hand I understand a start up being diligent in their hiring efforts since each new hire can have an outsized impact on the company. On the other hand, if they need that much consensus to make a hire, it could be a red flag and show how inefficient and “scrappy” the company really is.
Unfortunately standard, what are they doing for comp?
Early on in the process, I told them minimum 170 base to make a switch and they said no problem, but I sent an email to get confirmation on the range.
